Identical Twins. Scan showed something maybe wrong with one.

I recently found out I was having twins (identical and sharing a placenta) and had scan today at 18 weeks.
One twin is completely fine however the other had fluid on brain (I’m lost a bit as to where but it was slightly over the threshold for normal) and the left side of the heart was smaller than the right. Had an amniocentesis to check for genetic anomalies straight after and waiting for the outcome of this and then they will speak further.
Really, really worried about the little ones heart (they said it could be significant Issue or could resolve/get better as pregnancy continued).
I’m not sure what to think and really struggling with it all as if there’s a genetic difficulty it’ll be both babies. Also feel like I missed all the information they gave. Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation before, particularly with identical twins as they said it was unusual for there to only be a problem with one baby.

I can’t offer much advice but didn’t want to read and run. This must be stressful for you so please take care of yourself.
Are you able to give your community midwife a call? They might not be able to give you some new answers but should be able to take the time to go over what you’ve been told again and give you a chance to ask questions and just talk through the general process.

Thank you. Definitely will think about calling them.

I’m so sorry that you’re going through this @TwinbabiesFlowers

I’ve had issues picked up in singleton PGs and the wait is absolutely awful isn’t it?

I hope you get your answers soon and dont be afraid to ask them to repeat any information or write it down for you when you do get the results.

As missmarple said, try and take care of yourself. Me and DH found that going out for something to eat helped. It helped me with the PG hunger and being somewhere neutral helped DH open up a bit Flowers

Thank you. Definitely will think about calling them.

Hi @Twinbabies, just wanted to check in that you got the support you needed? Your thread has always stuck with me and I hope you are all doing ok.

Twinbabies · 30/07/2025 11:32

@missmarplesapprentice thank you for checking in. We found out it’s nothing genetic so one twin is likely okay. The other little twin has two possible outcomes from heart structure problems. One is that the baby will have surgery and be okay and the other his care will be palliative but could live for some years. We were given a lot of options for the pregnancy but have decided to carry on.

It’s not easy but we are really fortunate in the care and support we’re receiving from the hospitals and family.

Oh wow, what a lot this must have been for you to take in. I am glad you have a resolution and are being supported well. That's the main thing. Your latest message does sound like you are less "alone" and I'm grateful you came back to let us know.

You must do what's right for you and it sounds like that is exactly what you have done, so please look after yourself.

I wish you all the best with your little family and sending lots of love to you all.
