OMG! It's triplets!!!

Last friday I had my first ultrasound and it's triplets!! First pregnancy after several years of infertility and (quite surprisingly) just one round of IUI. We are shocked. We were praying for twins in case (me being 37 and with infertility issues) couldn't conceive again. But THREE??!!

I read all the triplets threads on here, but still have so many questions and I can't find the answers online. They booked me to have an specialist appointment in the high risk pregnancy unit (translating from my language, I am outside UK) but they haven't called me yet.

Could I ask for some parents of triplets to tell me something about your experience with the whole process? I can do with any information, and I don't mind if you're blunt, quite the contrary, I would like to tell me the scary bits too.

For example: How big am I going to be? Did they doctors told you about risks and what were they? At what week did you give birth? How was the birth? Did you have any complications? Were your children ok? How are they now? What about the car?! And the stroller?! And how will they sleep when babies? Three cots? Honestly, tell me anything even if you think it will be irrelevant!!

On the plus side of all this, I'm quite enjoying telling people and observing the shock on their faces. I must be very stupid, because I know they are shocked for me and my future life, but, don't ask me why, it's being really fun to see.

Awww, cute, heartwarming thread. 😍 How lovely. THREE babies for the price of one. Three times the work of one, but three times the fun, three times the joy, and three times the love.

Lucky you! 💕

Intrusive questions as well ... I was surprised at some of them. Wanting to know how they were conceived ... can't imagine anyone asking non multiple parents such a thing.

Yes this! Are they natural or IVF? Do you breastfeed them? How much did they weigh? Etc Shock

This in spades. I love being a triplet mum.

Do you know if they are in separate sacs? My friend had a really rare identical triplet pregnancy and one sack, she was in hospital for the last 10 weeks because it's risky. You should find out at the 12 week scan. That said this was in the USA where they are super risk adverse!

I know identical triplets too although they would be around 50 now Wink

Hi all! Sorry I´ve been away from mumsnet for a while. I´ve been really busy lately and also everytime I thought about reading the thread I couldn´t shake the feeling that I was making everything up. Sometimes I can´t believe it´s happening buuuuut....

I had another scan today and saw the babies and for today it all seems real again 😂I will post the pictures (hope the site allows me to do it).

They all are in different sacs with individual placentas. All seems well.

Oh, yes! Every person I tell ask me if they are ivf. I´m getting tired of the question but it´s not their fault, it´s because the answer it´s not that simple. It was through intrauterine insemination (IUI) and it turns out everyone knows what IVF its but IUI it´s not that known. Even for some doctors I encountered! I´m starting to explain saying that they gave me drugs to stimulate ovulation and I ovulated three times because of that.

Tell them simply that your dh is just pure stud... Nobody should be asking how you got 3!!

@Jassummer

Thank you so much for that lenghty post, it has so much valuable information.
I really hope my hospital impart those classes, and to show me around nicu, that would be so useful.

That's interesting you tell me about your kids being tall. My husband and me were discussing about this just a moment ago. We weren't sure if twins are shorter than single children or if it's a myth. It doesn't worry me either way. I am quite tall and always wished I were short and cute instead 😂

I have identical twin girls and they are on the shorter side at age 9. Made it to 36 weeks and were 6lb and 5 10oz when born so not tiny when born either. I’m 5 11” and was a very gangly teenager so actually I quite thought being a little bit shorter wasn’t such a bad thing.

I think sleep might be terribly important with multiples. My neighbour had twins and worked round the clock for ages and then got terribly unwell. I only had one but he had sleep apnoea and I also worked round the clock for years then got really ill. Neither of us has ever really recovered, so I think the heroics at the start were maybe not a great idea. The breastfeeding hormones can make the Mum feel kind of super-human and unfortuantely for some of us, it's just a feeling. LOL

It might be worth looking into whether you can hire help at night or something. I have no idea how that would work, but with hindsight, our whole lives would have been transformed by having a live-in nany or something just for the first few months. If I'd had someone there who knew what they were doing, they might have spotted the problems much much earlier than I did.

I think it's called a doula in the UK, but I'm not sure what it's called in spain.

Congratulations and good luck with it all. It sounds very exciting. You might want to think about contraception for afterwards. I've heard of ladies having the first baby with Ivf and then having another straight afterwards naturally.

Life changes enourmously after babies arrive, so take it easy and don't worry if you don't get out of the house for a while. Also make sure you can say "no" to you inlaws. This is a very very important skill.

I’d totally agree with this. I honestly don’t think I recovered till the twins went to nursery age 3 and I started slowly coming back to myself. The thing about sleep deprivation is it doesn’t just disappear, this is time for your body and brain to recover and you just build up an increasing deficit and eventually you seem to hit a cliff edge and get properly ill or get some proper rest and allow yourself to recover.

PinkPonyClub25 · 12/02/2025 16:07

Congratulations, I was pregnant with triplets however they shared the same sac and got TTS.
Take it easy lovely, plenty of rest and eat well. Good luck to you and your babies. Smile

Iloveeastereggs2020 · 12/02/2025 16:48

Triple lucky! I had twins, albeit you will have your hands a lot fuller but they are the biggest blessing and I count myself lucky everyday! Congrats

also, I found a twins group on Facebook super helpful, I’m sure there must be a triplet one

Congratulations!!! Hope you are feeling well. Just a note that we had a NICU premie and I swear that whatever steroids were given to me towards the end of pregnancy (I had two rounds as they try to develop lungs early when they know that they are going to have a premie coming), or whatever they did in the NICU post birth gave me a huge child when she caught up. She is 5 and was up until recently 98% for height. My husband and I are both short, as are our families. Barring being switched at birth, its about the only logical explanation. Her brother is tiny in comparison.

dramaaaalamaaaa · 12/02/2025 17:11

Oh and personal recommendation for a night nurse if you can afford it. The majority that I saw advertised noted that they had worked with parents of multiple babies, so that must be a thing that twin/triplet parents lean into (I would guess).

Triptastico · 13/02/2025 17:14

@Kiwithecat individual sacs is good and imo safer. I had 2 sharing a sac and they were at risk of twin to twin syndrome.

I have a few trip mum friends who babies were all in individual sacs and they had pretty straightforward pregnancies and went to full term for triplets.

I didn't have any extra help apart from a cleaner but if you've got the cash get as much help as you can afford. Smile

TinyMouseTheatre · 18/02/2025 07:12

How are you this week @Kiwithecat Wink

CerealPosterHere · 18/02/2025 07:22

Hiya, how are things going with the doctor that you didn’t trust? Any better? You mentioned about a guideline….I know you’re not in the U.K. but there is a Nice guideline which will be evidence based. Obviously Spain might be different but it could give you some knowledge?
Seems to say delivery at 35 weeks for triplets.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 18/02/2025 08:56

Spain uses Clinical Practice Guidelines from their National Health Service, but unfortunately I can't find anything on management of multiple pregnancy/birth. Might be worth calling the gynae/obstetrics depts at bigger hospitals and asking if it exists, could fluff it a little and say your local small area practitioner doesn't know exactly how to go about it... Sometimes in national health services you do unfortunately have to advocate hard for good care.

You could also show them the NICE guidelines and ask for it's equivalent. They may say the Spanish HS doesn't think there is enough evidence for x, y, z but that would require them to have a guideline to say it's not indicated, not no guideline at all.

(I'm sure I am a colossal pain as a patient but I remain absolutely polite and friendly throughout - I work for the NHS so I know it pays to be aware of policy and ask "why does that not apply in this case?")

@TinyMouseTheatre
Thanks for asking 💖Really struggling lately with nausea and being sick! But I'm sure it will go away soon 😊 Another annoying thing is that at 13 week I already have quite a bump that is growing really quickly and is making me scared of how big how soon I'm going to be. Also, because it's my first time pregnant I don't know how to behave and move with the bump and what to do and not to do. My current doubt and fear it's if I will squish them when I mindlessly fold down to pick something? 😂

@CerealPosterHere @IWillBeWaxingAnOwl
I actually have a good update about the medical situation! Sorry I forgot to share it. In the last appointment (in the small hospital), before I could voice my concerns, they told me they couldn't continue with my case there because they don't have the resources, so they have moved me to the main hospital. Very happy with that! 😄

Also I wanted to say thank you so much to all of you, lovely people, that are taking the time to give me tips, share stories or just saying congratulations. It means a lot and it's making me feel that I'm not alone in all of this 💖

I definitely don't think you'll squish them, the fluid protects them quite well from normal everyday things.

Sorry you're feeling so sick. Really feel for you Flowers

@Kiwithecat How are you finding the main hospital? It’s a good thing that you were moved. Hopefully there are a more resources in your current place.

TwinMama39 · 18/03/2025 17:47

Just another twin mum saying a massive congratulations on your pregnancy. I will never forget the joy of my doctor saying 'how do twins sound?' on my first scan!

You have had some good advice here. I will have a read and see if there is anything else that will help at this point.

I wish I could tell you that the nausea always goes away. Unfortunately, mine didn't. But I sure did enjoy when I could eat normally again the day after....I think I inhaled that first meal!

You have so many wonderful adventures ahead of you xx

HappyAsASandboy · 19/03/2025 06:34

I’m not a triplet mum but I have twins and two more!

Join TAMBA while you’re pregnant. They have so much information, advice, a helpline to call when you need a friend, and a list of local Twins/Triplets/More clubs.

I found going to a multiples baby group so helpful when mine were tiny; the relief of arriving in a room where everyone understood, and the mums of the older ones actually knew how to help was amazing.

You’re at the start of a wonderful adventure. Some moments will be so hard, but mostly it will be three times the wonderful!

gerispringer · 19/03/2025 06:44

One of my neighbours have triplets and as a present their family clubbed together to pay for a maternity nurse at night one day a week so they get a nights sleep. She also helped get the night feeds timed so they slept through reasonably early.
