Could second baby be ok?

Hi all, just found out at week 8 week scan today that there's a second little baby

Baby A is measuring 8w+2, heartbeat strong at 169 and all looking great, so pleased

Baby B is in a tiny gestational sac, measuring 7w+4 and amazingly also had a good strong heartbeat 150

The doctor doesn't seem too confident that Baby b will progress given the tiny gest sac and measuring behind, I was shocked to see even a heartbeat when I saw how small it looked, i was surprised it even measured 7w+4. the baby looks OK i think but the gest sac is way too small, it's crowded in there.

Has anyone ever had this and what was outcome either good or bad? I am back next Friday for another scan to check on things.

Any insight would be great as I am clueless to any of this.

Is there anything I can do to help gest sac grow ?

Could second baby be ok?

It could be that you fell pregnant on separate occasions so one is genuinely smaller because baby is younger? Best of luck xxx

I really hope so, i think the small gestational sac is the main concern, I'm hoping the sac will get bigger, baby seems to be growing and heartbeat good but gest sac smaller is the thing doctor kept talking about.

I'll know more next week, hoping it progresses

OP, what an amazing scan!

At 8 wks I think it's too soon to tell how it might progress, you'll have to wait for the next ultrasound. Nail-biting though, hang in there and best of luck.

My little twin had a very small gestational sac exactly like yours - her sac measured a week behind her and was half the size of her brothers. She also measured around 3 days behind her brother. I read about drinking loads and loads of water - literally felt like I was sloshing! Not to mention the amount of loo breaks! and by 10-12 weeks her sac size was definitely more like her brothers x

I haven’t had twins but i did have an IVF baby who measured a week behind what her dates ‘should’ have been. She was fine! So the measurements aren’t an exact science xx

I'm drinking loads of water too lol I will do for foreseeable, fingers crossed, who knows I could be lucky x

Just to give the other side, I sadly did lose a twin at 12 weeks who had been measuring quite a bit behind. It's most likely it had a chromosomal issue that was incompatible with further development. Other baby was super healthy and is now my gorgeous DS. However I know from having done lots of research that you absolutely can have a discrepancy in size and have a successful twin pregnancy 😊

Massively massively crossing fingers for you btw ❤️

Scan today showed baby b with no heartbeat, it has grown a full week to 8w+4. Doctor wants me back next Friday to confirm, I mentioned vanishing twin snd he said technically this isn't vanishing twin, so I'm unsure what's happening.

He said we want to see baby b regress but wouldn't say much more than that other than to say it could be a high risk pregnancy and I may need to be under care of specialist, hoping everything goes ok from here.

Baby A is measuring bang on dates 9w+4 and heartbeat of 162 which I'm hoping is a great sign.

@38andtrying I'm so so sorry to hear this. This is exactly what happened to me. Twin present at 12 week scan with no heartbeat measuring 9 weeks (had last been scanned at 7 weeks).
By 20 weeks there was no sign.
I'm so sorry about your twin 😞 but really hoping all will be plain sailing with other baby as it was with me.

38andtrying · 14/04/2023 19:28

@rattlinbog that's reassuring, thanks so much x

I wasn't even under consultant care as the rest of the pregnancy was very straightforward. DS 2.5 now!

38andtrying · 14/04/2023 20:49

That's brilliant, fingers crossed its plain sailing from here on in, could be doing with a bit of good luck x

@38andtrying I hope you're ok. I found it so hard to take everything in and deal with everything. Take care of yourself.
