Do you know any triplets, quads or more?

My midwife said in her 35 year career she's only ever delivered quadruplets once, and had less than 20 triplets.

It got me thinking, how common are they? And what kind of life would you have being one of many? Do you know of any, young or adult?

I knew a lady with identical triplets, very high risk pregnancy as they shared one placenta. All were fine born at 31 weeks, at college now

BeckettandCastle · 05/01/2023 21:19

I used to work with one. Two identical boys and a girl. Loved hearing stories about them growing up and how close they are. About 30 years old and conceived naturally and their mums 5th, 6th & 7th children.

A friend of a friend had triplets at 43, naturally conceived (attributed to her ovaries flinging out loads of eggs as a last hurrah pre-menopause Shock)crosses 43 year old legs and doubles up on contraception

Oh gosh, I'm almost 43 and tired - this is my worst nightmare!

I'm over 50 and have known 4 sets of twins and one set of triplets.

User478 · 05/01/2023 23:23

A boarding school I worked at had 1 of a "set" of quads; at 11 they had all been sent to separate boarding schools to 'make them stand on their own feet' she was miserable, she had never been apart from the others until the first night, cried the boarding house down, poor girl.

Ahnobother · 05/01/2023 23:25

@User478 that's very sad. Did she settle?
I'm an identical twin and I have a very close relationship with my sister. Something like they would have destroyed me.

twinwithtriplets · 12/01/2023 20:55

I'm a twin(fraternal) and I had triplets - so I know lots of triplets and a set of quads. The first couple of years are horrific but it is wonderful and I'm very blessed.

IWantToBeNynaeve · 12/01/2023 21:02

I know one set of triplets , they're in their 50s now. I also grew up with a girl who had 2 sets of twins (also all girls ) as siblings.

Violinist64 · 12/01/2023 21:03

I lived next door to triplets when I was a little girl. They were a couple of years older than me and l often played with them. They were girls identical: twins and the other one was non-identical, which il understand is the most common form of triplets. The other case l remember was a family who lived nearby when my own children were small. They already had three children and thought it would be a good idea to have a fourth but the fourth was, indeed, triplets.

2chocolateoranges · 12/01/2023 21:05

I went to school with triplets, they were identical boys and my children went to school with a set of triplets 2identical boys and a girl.

Babyroobs · 12/01/2023 21:09

I know 2 sets of triplets, no quads. I wouldn't have thought many midwives would have delivered quads in their career? And delivering 20 sets of triplets seems a lot for one midwife !

RuthW · 12/01/2023 21:10

I know two sets of triplets in real life and another two sets through work. Never any more than 3 though.

bananamum13 · 12/01/2023 21:12

I know 2 sets of triplets IRL, and many sets of twins. No quads though so far.

chocolatepudandchocolatesauce · 12/01/2023 21:12

@AnonKat waves I too am a triplet 😁

Januaryisshit · 12/01/2023 21:13

I knew a lady who gave birth to a single baby, then twins and then triplets!!

7catsisnotenough · 12/01/2023 21:19

I went to school with identical triplets in the 70's so obviously natural triplets (ivf was yet to be) My daughter has identical twins, again natural.
Apologies if my terminology is wrong but I believe the increased incidence of multiple births is inextricably linked to ivf and multiple implantations so it's more common for twins/ triplets/ quads to be born now?

PolarBlair · 12/01/2023 21:19

There were identical triplet girls a few years below me in school 25 years ago.
As a teacher I taught identical triplet girls who'd be about 20 now. There were boy triplets non identical in the same school who'd be about 12 now. Different school (I taught in, not attended) a set of triplet boys (2 identical one not). They're probably about 16 now.
Current school set of non identical triplet girls aged about 10.
My sister also taught triplets in another school, 2 boys and a girl or vice versa.
My parents were friends with a man who was one of identical triplets, they must be in their late 70s if they're still alive.

That's more than I thought but as a teacher in a few different schools I've met a lot of kids!!!

fabricstash · 12/01/2023 21:22

I am a triplet too 👋🏻and from the days before ivf

Namechangedatheist · 12/01/2023 21:24

My mother had four pregnancies. These were a very long time ago, long before scans and better management of multiple births etc.
First was a single
Second was twins, although one didn't survive (went to full term 7lb 14 and 8lb 14 respectively)
Third was triplets, again one of which didn't survive.
When she fell pregnant again she was worried in case it was 4. It was just me.

BloodAndFire · 12/01/2023 21:28

I have only ever known one set of triplets and they were the product of IVF in the 1980s. I have never met any 'higher' multiples or any natural triplets.

Know lots and lots of twins though, many of them conceived naturally.

I'm 42 and this scares the crap out of me

Cantseethewindows · 12/01/2023 21:36

About 20 years ago I had a fling with a guy who was a triplet (identical brother and a sister). Taught boy triplets (looked identical to me although apparently one wasn't). Know of two sets irl (the mum of one set had twins second time round!!!) and one in a parenting group on Facebook. I also remember seeing a woman pushing a triplet pram at a Christmas market a few years ago - the crowds parted for her it was so big!

I think it's about 1/1000 pregnancies that are triplets? I suppose you don't always know that someone is one of triplets.

Skiphopbump · 12/01/2023 21:44

I’ve only ever met one set of triplets. It was when I was on the postnatal ward, one lady had been travelling in Australia and met someone. The lady then found she was pregnant, initially told she was having twins and then found out there were three!

Spendonsend · 12/01/2023 21:46

Ive never met triplets.
