Do you know any triplets, quads or more?

My midwife said in her 35 year career she's only ever delivered quadruplets once, and had less than 20 triplets.

It got me thinking, how common are they? And what kind of life would you have being one of many? Do you know of any, young or adult?

My ex was a quintuplet, born in the late 60's. All were born live but unfortunately only he and two of his sisters survived

I've been teaching 20-odd years and never had triplets or quads in the school. I've never actually had twins in my class but I've known of plenty in other classes. One of the teachers at my current school is one of triplets.

Cuppasoupmonster · 05/01/2023 19:26

I know 1 set of triplets, no quads and a lot of twins. Most triplets are conceived through IVF.

Halifaxgirl · 05/01/2023 19:27

I have triplets 😀all grown up now .I’ve only ever met others through TAMBA although a relative of mine has young triplets and my fathers half sisters were triplets . I believe IVF clinics in this country limit embryo transfers to 1 or 2 now so this could be behind a fall in sets , if there is a fall ?

AnonKat · 05/01/2023 19:28

I'm a triplet 😊 and there was another set of triplets in my year at secondary school.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/01/2023 19:32

My older two brothers are twins but I don't think twins are all that rare anymore. I went to school with a set of twins and a set of triplets - in adulthood I'm still friends with one of the twins but by now I can tell them apart (though I only have seen the other one at her sister's wedding.)

I know a primary school where, unless any of the families move they will have 3 sets of identical girl twins in the Reception year in 2024!

CMOTDibbler · 05/01/2023 19:36

I knew a set of triplets when I was a guide, and the lady who lives opposite us is a triplet and in her 80's. She loves to tell the story of her birth and how a bathroom was commandeered to nurse them in as the heating and humidity could be kept really high. Rather wonderfully, when she became a nurse herself, she worked on a ward with the doctor who had looked after her as a baby

I don't "know" anyone who is or has more than twins. But I did see a mum wrestling toddler triplets on and off a busy London bus last week. Respect!

bitingcat · 05/01/2023 19:38

In my daughter's first year of secondary school there were 5 sets of twins in year group of 100!

Veryfishy · 05/01/2023 19:39

Naturally conceived

Wonderful.stories here. I've been teaching 28 years in a big, inner-city secondary and have never taught triplets or quads. Plenty twins, though. Dh's brothers are natural twins (so different you would never believe they're even brothers, but one of them is the spit of DH, so much so DS3 couldn't tell the difference as a baby 🤣) and one of them has twins too.

When DS1 was born I used to see a local dad with a specially made buggy for his quads- 3 girls and a boy- walking around/ sometimes in the doctor's surgery. They were probably around 2/3 then, so would be 20/21 now. We moved so I didn't see them grow up. Cool though. They were absolutely beautiful and impeccably behaved!!!

Total respect!

Twins are 2 a penny round here - 6 sets in Reception (of 90 kids). Affluent area with older mums who have had fertility treatment. I know of 2 sets of triplets.

Spidey66 · 05/01/2023 19:53

I'm in my 50s and in my juniors there was triplets in my class-identical twin girls and a boy. It definitely wasn't ivf as this was before ivf. I don't know if the mother was taking fertility drugs-i know there were older children.

I've not seen or heard from them for 40 years, so don't know how they turned out, but from memory the family were overcrowded and there was long battles every Monday because they never had their dinner money. Looking back its clear there was a shortage of money and I don't understand why they didn't get FSM.

MadeInChorley · 05/01/2023 20:05

I met someone who had “newborn” triplets when DS1 was a newborn. I put newborn in inverted commas, because they were actually 3 months old but all still smaller than my hefty DS1 was at birth. Identical (twin?) girls and a boy. Mum had a triplet pram with the three bassinets were stacked like a pyramid. I’d see her pushing the babies around looking absolutely knackered. She was about 5’1” and had difficulty seeing over the top. We got chatting and went for coffee. She was breastfeeding all three. She moved away from London to be nearer family quite soon after.

WinterCarlisle · 05/01/2023 20:06

I know several sets of twins and one set of triplets.

There were also quads at a playgroup I used to go to. The mum was amazing and SO well organised. She used to have them all on reins so when they arrived, all excited, they’d rush in like a pack of huskies towing her along 😆. The mum worked nights as a nurse. I’ve NO idea how she did it all.

crimbocountdown · 05/01/2023 20:12

I know several sets of triplets. None are IVF - all naturally conceived

When I was having my twins in hospital a girl in the bed next to me was 21 and having naturally conceived triplets and had a toddler at home - all girls 🥰

JennyForeigner · 05/01/2023 20:14

Good friends with triplets in college and thereafter. They were in the national newspapers for rarity when they were born though!

We have ivf twins and a midwife told us triplets are still rare because of restrictions on the number of embryos which can be implanted and because the health risks remain profound.

Grassynoel · 05/01/2023 20:16

My mum had triplets but they sadly only lived for two days. She went on to have twins in her next pregnancy. That was 30 years ago.

Testng123 · 05/01/2023 20:21

I know 3 sets of triplets, in their 20's, 40's and 60's now

spidereggs · 05/01/2023 20:31

No humans, lots of sheep.

UsingChangeofName · 05/01/2023 20:34

There were two sets of triplets in two years at Primary school with my dc.
