Twin births

Hi there, I am expecting identical twins at the end of May. I am interested in peoples experiences in giving birth to more than one baby! I have a 3 year old boy already and had a relatively quick natural birth with him. I am hoping for a natural birth again, providing pregnancy continues to go well and twins are in good positions.

Hi Bosch
My experiences with other mums so far has been that consultants want to do planned c/s at 36wks. I do NOT think this is needed if no probs ie tts etc. You have a very good chance of having a great birth as you had a good time with your 3 year old. I am looking forward to teaching my next twins classes where a mum is considering home birth for twins. She has a little girl with a good bith experience first time.

blimey... lots of twins expected in May. Congratulations.

You'll probably have to fight a bit to get a natural birth but good luck.

Come and join us on the d'y' ever thread. Lots of multiple mums there

Hi Boschwife, I had identical twin girls 21 weeks ago and had a natural birth (about 12 hours). They are/were my first ones too. Both girls were head down from about 32 weeks which I think helped matters but even when twin 2 was breech (up until 32 weeks) I was still told that a natural birth was possible. To be honest, no one even mentioned c-section to me at any point! I ended up having them a little early 35+2 but both were fine after a short stint in SCBU (for feeding issues & temp control mainly). Twin 1 was delivered with forceps as her heart rate was dropping which resulted in a 3rd degree tear for me (ouch!) but all is healed now and I have a really positive memory of my labour. Hope all goes well with your pregnancy!

hi boschwife and congratulations

my consultant was all for a vb from the start, didn't have to fight for it at all and although was due to see him at 35+1 due to concerns about dt1's growth rate, I went into spontaneous labour bang on 35 wks and had assisted (forceps, dt1) vb and dt2 was footling breech

good luck whatever happens!

no question of c section here, vb with an epidural (my choice, but was advised to anyway) ds1 was 3.3 when dts arrived 9mths ago

boschwife · 20/01/2008 20:34

Thanks for all your stories and advice. Good to hear some positive birth stories as the 2 twin mums I know locally both had planned c sections and very doughtful when I mentioned I was hoping for natural birth!

hhowdy natural epidurally filled birth of BG twins 6.6 & 7.5lbs - nearly 15 years ago........ welcome

Idobelieveinfairies · 21/01/2008 11:06

I had 2 c-sections.

The consultant didn't want them to happen as i had had 4 natural delivireies before. (well..induced does that count?)

But with my 1st set they were lying transverse and breech and got stuck there at 6lb 13 abd 7lb 12.

2nd set were c-sec because there was no sign of labour starting. Got to 40 weeks and not a contraction in sight. I wasn't allowed to be induced and so i had the c-section.

They are very much for natural deliveries here.

Good luck

I had a normal quick and easy delivery with my twins.
Went into natural labour at 35 weeks, pains started about 8pm, Twin 1 born at 8am and twin 2 at 9.01am
Had mobile epidural so no pain for 1st birth but could feel my legs. Epidural had worn off by the 2nd birth so I felt that!!!
Home in 5 days

I had a dd already who was 4.

Good luck x
