twins transfer from cots to beds

im not sure when to put my b/g twins into beds, theyre 2.4 months, my daughter understands everything and I think shes ready but my son has a speech delay, I don't think hes ready, I don't think he will understand that he has to stay there... not sure whether to change my girls bed and leave my sons cot for now or just take the plunge, change both cot beds and deal with all the getting up?! anyone been a similar position...

If they are not trying to climb out their cots I would personally leave them until nearer age 3.

If they're comfortable in cots, not climbing out and sleep well, leave them where they are for now. Do they share a room? When the time came for my triplets to go into beds (when the boys were managing to jump their cots around the room!), the bedroom had no toys in there, just their beds and bedroom furniture (if you can fix the chest of drawers and wardrobe to the wall all the better) with a gate on the bedroom door. I did the usual bedtime routine, gave them their cuddle rags, lights off and I sat on the end of the bed completely ignoring them unless it was to tell them to lie down and go to sleep. Took around 4 nights and it was sorted.

My dts started climbing out of their cots when they were around 20 months. We moved them in to beds, and it was really hard work.
They didn't stay in bed, they understood that I was telling them to stay there, they just choose not to do it.
They did everything apart from stay in bed and sleep.
Honestly, don't do it. Not until you have to or, until they can be bribed reasoned with.

thanks for the replies! yeah theyre in the same room. im gonna take all your advice, most of my mum friends seem to change their beds by two, I know it doesn't matter what anyone else is doing but wasn't sure if I was sort of keeping them young by keeping them in cots.. but the stair gate at their door idea is great, thanks il keep that in mind.

That old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good'un.

Agree with previous posters, first time we tried it was torture - tried the stairgate on bedroom door and they just stood there sobbing until they eventually fell asleep in a pile at the door. We had cot beds so had taken the sides off to convert them into toddler beds. Think we lasted 3 nights before we put the sides back on.

Left it 6 months and tried again. Much easier 2nd time around.

If your daughter can be trusted to stay in bed, and will be in the same room as your son, it may be that he can watch and learn if she went in a bed.

I'm not going to brave it until mine are 7. Ha!
Seriously, one DD is so strong willed and she can open her bedroom door and climb over a stairgate so there will be no stopping her.
But she can't get out of cotbed yet so I'm waiting til absolutely necessary!
