Were you bf-ing when you conceived your multiples? Entirely unscientific straw poll but read somewhere that this increases your chances.

TTC at the moment and love to daydream about twins even though I guess I'd never sleep again

GoofyIsACow · 13/07/2013 16:22

No, stopped feeding DS1 12mths ish earlier :)

MultipleMama · 13/07/2013 16:27

Yes. My twins are 9mo still EBF. We stopped using condoms on my b.day and 2 weeks later boom.I am now 19+4 weeks PG.

Wildwaterfalls · 13/07/2013 19:55

Interesting, thanks! Any more?

Any other old wives tales factors in conceiving twins?

Must add I would be delighted with one too of course Smile

No first babies

PollyPlummer · 13/07/2013 20:04

Nope first babies here too.

beachesandbuckets · 13/07/2013 21:57

No. Have 2 older dcs, nothing done any different this time that with conceiving first two (though older and already have kids which apparently ups the chances)

Cheerymum · 13/07/2013 22:01

Nope, BF DD to 1 year, started trying soon after she turned 2, now 28 weeks nearly with identical girls. Am over 35, age is a factor for identical twins, I believe.
And whilst its very exciting to be having twins, I have found twin pregnancy pretty challenging, and that's without any significant complications so far ? just something to bear in mind and be glad to have avoided if you end up pregnant with just the one!!

Wildwaterfalls · 13/07/2013 22:55

Very wise words cheerymum. I guess daydreams only ever contain the positive bits...

ClairesTravellingCircus · 14/07/2013 07:07

No.
Age and number of previous pregnancies do increase the chances though.

heritagewarrior · 14/07/2013 07:26

I think the older you are the more likely you are to conceive non-identical twins, as your body can start releasing more than one egg per cycle as you approach the end of your reproductive life, in an attempt to maximise your chances of becoming pregnant! Then you just need a partner who is some sort of super sperm and can fertilise both, and Bob's your uncle!!

Cheerymum · 14/07/2013 07:54

And some communities that eat lots of yams have more twins I believe - not sure if it is proven that the yams are what do it though!

MultipleMama · 14/07/2013 08:05

Just to add in case it changes anything. My 1st set are Identical MoMo boys, and I think I'm PG with fraternal. Find out next week if I'm correct. I'm 23.

andadietcoke · 14/07/2013 08:48

No, first babies. I have a higher BMI though, and apparently that 'helps' too.

Linguaphile · 14/07/2013 09:14

Nope, first babies, bit of a surprise pregnancy as we were on the 'not too bothered' end of seeing what would happen if we pulled the goalie. Bingo on the first month with DCDA girls, no family history. They say height and milk consumption might have something to do with it, though--something to do with a specific growth hormone, apparently. I'm 28 and had a borderline underweight bmi, so age and weight weren't factors for me.

I really wanted twins until I actually got pregnant with them! The discomfort of pregnancy (21 weeks of ms, severe back pain, and now one has actually fractured my rib!) mixed with the logistics of prepping/caring for two has all been a bit daunting.

harrygracejessica · 14/07/2013 10:08

Nope not for either set

AcrylicPlexiglass · 14/07/2013 10:17

no. they were my first children.

Wildwaterfalls · 14/07/2013 10:26

Hmm there doesn't seem to be much in it. Oh well.. off to have a large glass of milk and some yams

HystericalParoxysm · 14/07/2013 10:31

I stopped bf almost 2 years prior to twin conception.

DoingTheSwanThing · 14/07/2013 10:55

Nope, stopped about 18m before

Starfish1980 · 14/07/2013 20:31

First babies, well i had two early miscarriages in the previous year

toomuchpink · 14/07/2013 22:00

No. My oldest was weaned by then. She was not far off two.

RedPencils · 14/07/2013 22:04

No first babies.

I love mine to death but I wouldn't recommend two at a time, btw. It's hard work.
