Flying alone with 2 year old twins

I have 3 weeks holiday at Easter, and DH has to work (poor him!). I am seriously considering flying back to England for a few days at my parents', with my twins, who will be 27 months. I wouldn't use their hand luggage allowance and just take one bag for us all, and check in one piece. They have been brilliant when we have all flown together, and I think it will be OK......

but is that wishful thinking? Am I crazy to even consider it? Anyone flown alone with twins of that age and how did it go? Are there problems I haven't thought about?

have you checked with the airline whether you are able to travel with 2 small children....no experience just a thought???

How long is the flight?
How far do you have to travel at each end?

I have done a solo flight with twins. I was fortunate to be able to take a double stroller all the way onto the plane, which I could then use at the other end as well. If I couldn't have done this it would have been impossible. Even so it was hard work.

Is there a friend who might want to come with you?

Agree with twin, I think there are restrictions on min ages with 1 parent, to do with emergencies

Thanks for the advice twin2 - I know I couldn't fly alone before they were 2 as they have to each sit on an adult's lap. Now they get their own seat, I've assumed it will be OK - but a good idea to check.

thirdfromleft, it's only 90 minutes, and we'll get a lift to and from the airport each end, so all very smooth! We have also been able to keep the buggy all the way to the plane, when I've done the trip with DH. Just knowing someone else has been mad brave enough to do it gives me more confidence!

your welcome but as i said no experience so hope it will work out for you, only you know how your twins normally behave, and i guess the only worry i would have is how i would cope if they were both playing up and with no where to go!! but then im a stress head lol

I know this post is a month old but wanted to type with my experience. My DH flew with our dt's for a 4 hour flight on his own when the girls were 27 months old. He was allowed to take the buggy to the boarding gate as they were not great walkers at that point. He said it was fine and he had lots of snacks. I think being a man he got
lots of help from the air hosties etc but he survived.

It was not by choice he did this but our eldest son's passport had expired and we did not realise till be got to the airport. He was not allowed to fly and we spent 24 hours in the passport office in London before joining them on holiday so DH agreed he would go ahead with the girls!

I am sure you will be fine as one adult can fly with 2 small children once they are over 2.

We're all booked now, I've decided to go for it, am sure it will be fine. Going on a plane to visit Nanny and Grandad should provide enough excitement to keep them happy! I have just checked my passport though, in the light of your story.....poor you!

I did this with my 2.4 yr old twins and it was great! Main thing is to check at both ends that you can take your buggy to the gate and if you can't to seriously think about assistance. I flew back from Zurich and they insisted on confiscating the buggy at check in and I had to carry one tantrumming over-tired toddler (and all our hand luggage) kicking and screaming all the way from check in to the gate - it was a nightmare - while the other one thankfully did what she was told and pottered along. :)

Other than that my girls were impeccably behaved and we were treated like royalty, everyone seemed to think they were very cute and I found the whole thing so much easier than travelling with two adults and two under-2s because at least they had their own seat, which they loved.
