Could it be twins?

I am currently around 10 weeks pregnant with my 2nd. There is a strong history of twins in my family with both my mother and maternal grandmother having them.
At my booking in appointment a week ago the midwife felt my tummy and said I felt about 12/13 weeks gone, yet I am very sure of my dates and she couldn't detect a heartbeat, which she said suggested my dates are correct as the heartbeat is extremely difficult to find before 12 weeks. I also have been extremely ill with this pregnancy which is something I didn't experience at all with DS.
I havn't had my scan date through yet but would be interested to know others experiences. The midwife said she wouldn't like to say it was twins but that due to my family history, I should prepare myself for the possibility.

I think it is a strong possibility but you wont know for sure until the scan - prepare yourself but dont get your hopes up or anything. I know it must be excruiating but you will just have to wait and see! Let us know how you get on. Smile

hi, sound likely although i had this with number 3 i was measureing 2 to 3 weeks ahead was really sick ect lots of twins in family ect went for my scan at 19 weeks and just one baby ! i was really disappointed as i had convinced myself it was twins.

kidstrack2 · 08/04/2006 22:21

oh how exciting! theres lots of mummies on here who have twins, maybe one of them will pop by soon!

SomethingAboutMary · 08/04/2006 22:24

Not sure about the measuring big, but i found with my 2nd pregnancy i was V V ill at the beginning, so ill i could hardly get out of bed, the difference for me was it was a girl this time round, 1st time round it was a boy.
Goodluck & do you get to have a scan at 12 weeks?

MerlinsBeard · 08/04/2006 22:26

i was bigger and sicker with my 2nd pregnancy ( i have 2 boys) but both times had heartbeats from 1st appt, maybe placenta is in front?

tegan · 09/04/2006 20:28

I had an emergency scan when I was 10 weeks with dd2 because I was in size 18 maternity clothes and I am only a 12 normaly.
MW was adament I was having twins but when I had the scan they told me it was only 1 and she only weighed 7lb 3oz at birth. figure that out.

hi pinkmagic

I am mum to non identical boys whoo found out she was carrying twins at 6 weeks pregnantShock

I was "big" very quickly we thought I was further on too but no just 2 babies

jabberwocky · 13/04/2006 15:43

I went in at 10 1/2 weeks. Was very, very sure of my dates. The mw said I had to be at least 14 weeks. We booked a scan and I was right about the dates, and just one baby. I also have twins in my family and I have to admit was pretty nervous before the scan.

CaptainDippy · 13/04/2006 15:48

Ooooooh exciting - not experience / advice, but I'll be watching this one!! Grin

Not to burst your bubble, but it might not be twins. I measured large and ahead of my dates for all of mine, including the DTs (g/b). However, if it is twins.... rest as much as you can cos when they're born you hit the ground running lol!

Congratulations btw Grin

jambuttie · 13/04/2006 16:15

agree with mars you hid the ground with a thudGrin

Mine are now 2 and I am constantly running about after them and their big brother who is 4.

I go to work in the evenings between 5 and 10 for a rest

oops

MadameDeMars · 13/04/2006 16:19

I'm guessing you agree jambuttie? lol Grin

biglips · 13/04/2006 16:25

my mum is a non-identical twin and on my Dads side there are 4 sets of non-identical twins and also my Dads mum - my nan - is a twin herself

BUT me and my brother got 1 DD each (18m & 12m)... i was terrified that i may have twins as i was HUGE at the beginning..... i had a big baby - 9lb 1oz (but you'll never know till you have a scan)

CONGRATS XXXX
