my dd is 3 years old and it starting to want to comb hair on her dolly. she has bald black, white and brown ones. I now want to get her one that represents her own beauty and not those of other races alone.

But can I find one? the 'black' dolls all have straight hair and caramel complexions and caucasain features. As a minority living in a country where there are so few positive images out there of black women I would like her to have this one little gift that I was also denied growing up in 1970's britain. I have managed to source books with images of black princesses etc but no toys/dolls. Does anyone of anywhere I can go for these?

The Pattycake doll company has some great dolls for black and asian kids. They are based the the USA but they ship to the UK.
There is a cute black toddler doll there with nice curly hair for $46, which is around £23.
Here is the link to that doll www.storesonline.com/site/480019/product/62704P
Hope that helps a little..

Go onto ebay and type in 'multicultural toys'

You'll have to sift through cos I'm no good at links but there is a company on there who always has beautiful black and oriental dolls.

i'm a childminder and have managed to collect a beautiful black, soft bodied doll, a chinese little girl and a downs syndrome little girl, who is truely adorable with all the features of a child with 'downs'

A fellow childminder also has an 'overweight' doll from the same company.

If i can find the company name i will post it

it terrified the life out of my dds and they refused to play with it

Cappuccino · 21/08/2008 14:25

I am sure I saw one in ELC. My sister had one about 50 years ago (Dinah - well it was the 1950s) and she adored it. Still has it.

My dd's favourite doll is one of these here from Corolle. They make 'older' dolls too.
