I have just ordered her autobiography. To me, she is an inspirational and intelligent beauty who stands out amongst her peers. Oprah Winfrey once said that she wished Alek had been around when she was growing up. I think that comment resonates with many women of colour like me living in the west because we are bombarded with eurocentric ideals of beauty. I love Alek because she embraces her dark skin and her African features.

Skin lightening creams are prevalent in both black and asian cultures and thank goodness we have women like Alek, Iman and Naomi Campbell who are comfortable in their own skins.

I only have sons but I still intend to expose to them images of someone like Alek as an antidote to the accepted eurocentric vision of beauty and teach them that beauty comes in all shades of colour and ethnicity.

Hear hear! Alek has gorgeous skin...

I applaud you for trying to consciously teach your sons that beauty is more than what is promoted in the mainstream media I hope my DD will take it from DH and I that her hair doesn't need chemicals ti be attractive, etc. Sadly though, even now we can be our worst enemy for poking fun at our physical characteristics

Do you know how many times I have heard older West Indian women talk about "pitney wid good hair or nappy hair"?

What does that mean, spokette?

I think Alek Wek is incredibly beautiful, and her hair looks great like that.

I had a Dinka friend who when we were growing up always used to straighten her hair and torture it into straight ponytails. Then I met her by chance when we were at university and she'd cut it all off, Alek Wek style. It looked stunning, and she admitted it had been a complete revelation to her when she realised she could just wear it naturally instead of trying to make it something it wasn't.

Frogs, pitney is patois for children so it means "children with good hair or nappy (ie tightly curled) hair".

it's pickney round our way

frogs · 07/01/2008 17:31

I probably could have just asked my kids, they seem to speak something approaching patois as soon as my back is turned.

geekymummy · 07/01/2008 17:37

my mum still calls me pickney, lol

I've been to one fashion show in my time and Alek Wek was on the catwalk. My God, she was amazing to look at.

LyraSilvertongue · 07/01/2008 17:57

Hmmm, I'd say she was more striking than beautiful.

LoveAngel · 07/01/2008 17:59

She's incredibly striking. I love her skin tone - dramatically beautiful.

spokette · 07/01/2008 19:22

The correct patois term is pickney but for some reason my DM says "pitney" so that tends to be my default spelling.
