Was I racist?

Dh and I are white. All our children have blue marks on their bums. Ds2 has features that all of us have individually, but put together on him he looks mixed-race. So sometimes I call him "Brown Baby". Today I got jumped on by someone for doing this. She said that because neither dh nor I are black, ds2 isn't mixed-race, and so it's racist to pretend that he is, particularly to use a term that you wouldn't call a 'true' mixed-race baby.

What do you think?

Why can't you call your child brown baby if he has brown skin.

Who was this mad person that thinks you were trying to pretend your baby is mixed race and you should be excluded from using this term affectionately with your child as you and your dp are white. What tosh.

What is a 'true mixed race' baby fgs? Many Europeans are dark skinned and if they give a pet name to the baby and call her/him brown, maybe it's because they are?????

I'm mixed but very light skinned - am I therefore not allowed to be called mixed race as I can pass for southern European?

My DS is particularly mixed but looks nothern european - does that mean I can't refer to him mixed race? He looks like he's from a sweden but if I were to call him my swedish baby would that be racist as he isn't swedish?

Are people that bonkers!!

The true racism is when people seem to think it's ok to determine your race/ethnicity for you or your kids. I've come across it alot.
