Thanks snowmum, i am for going, the place looks good.

Momontherun, how come you know the chief?

Are we meeting on the 30th Jan then? I might take a day off and take my DS with me so i can also do Mon.

autumnlover · 16/01/2007 21:41

hi everyone

snowmum - just to let you know i got email. thank you very much.

would love to meet up with everyone, but dd1 would still be doing 1/2 days at school (part of the settling in process). have a great time.

i'm about 5ft2in and have already gained 7kgs in this pregnancy - i'm so . but hey ho, might be the chocolate and custard desserts i keep having.

anyone else got a stinking cold at the moment?? i cant shake mine off and i'm feeling terrible.

MomOnTheRun · 16/01/2007 21:53

My husband is a chef (another reason why I can't lose the extra weight) and he likes meeting top chefs so that he can learn from their experiences. He had heard of Mr Leung's name a long time ago and got articles of him from magazines, but it was coincidence that we went to his resturant to have dinner that he finally met the man in person. A very nice man and humble for his ranking in the food industry.

snowmum · 18/01/2007 14:13

Blimey MomOnTheRun, you married a chef! You jammy thing, can imagine the gorgeous food you must serve up in your house....

So far its Mellow, Wyls, MomOnTheRun and me for Chinese Experience on Tues 30th Jan. Pity you can't make it Autumn.

I can't believe how windy it is today. DD fell asleep in the car on the way home so I'm currently sitting in the car typing away. Everytime we get a big gust of wind, the whole car shakes!

MomOnTheRun · 19/01/2007 00:08

I only got home at 22:30 and I left the office at 17:45. All mainline railway stations were closed in London. Everybody was in relative good spirits which was a surprise. There was limited service at Kings Cross after 20:00 and whenever they made an announcment for the next train, all the people just rushed to that platform. Brought back memories of Shen Zhen.

mellownomore · 19/01/2007 06:42

I got a train from Coventry at 1 pm and finally, after many changes, got back to Brentford in West London at 7.30 pm. Needless to say, I was completely wiped out. I had gone to Coventry at 7.30 am that morning for a meeting!

wyls · 19/01/2007 12:30

Hello, I hope the train is back to normal today. It was a nightmare yesterday with the wind and rain.

Snowmum, i cant believe you were typing in the car, not a bad idea though. ha ha

I have spoken to Champagne and we are both coming to the lunch on the 31st Jan. I am going to take a day off so i am going to bring my DS with me. I cant wait for my DS to meet your DD. What time shall we meet then? I am so excited!!! Btw, do they do highchairs or booster seat in there? Does anyone know? Shall i phone them up?

champagne18 · 19/01/2007 15:34

Hi there,

Yep wyls and i will be coming out together. i will be bringing my little boy out too!
Anytime after 1pm suits me as i have a dentist appointment in the morning and it will take us at least 1 hr to get to chinatown.

do we need to swap number etc?

i look forward to seeing you all on the 30th Jan tuesday.

snowmum · 19/01/2007 15:54

Oh goody! Other DC's will be at the lunch and can (hopefully) amuse themselves, leaving us mums free to chat. Glad you are coming Champagne. No idea on highchairs, you fancy calling to find out Wyls? Re timing, shall we say 1pm? Wonder if we can book?

Must go, just a quick dip today as its DH's b'day. Gotta go exhaust DD so she settles quickly tonight and gives our babysitter an easy time (so we can use her again in the future!!) Have a good weekend everyone.

breadgirl · 20/01/2007 00:50

Hi, i don't think i can make the meet up, which is a shame. It isn't enough time for me as i still have to pick up dd1 from school.
mumontherun, lucky you have a dh who is a chef. My dad was a (normal) chef but i still love his cooking. Unfortunately he didn't teach me so i can't really cook. Dh can't really cook either but i do the cooking and have to say i am boring and v limited .. although i cook mainly from scratch.
When i was little, we used to have a take away then a restaurant and i wanted to help, like peel potatoes, but dad wouldn't let me and he'd give me ice cream to eat instead.

teacakes · 20/01/2007 21:23

Hello all,
It has been awhile since I've written on this site. I am getting very jealous of all this talk about meeting up in Chinatown and dim sum. I wish I still live in Ldn too! It is such a rare treat for us to have dim sum, especially as I don't read Chinese so it is sometimes a bit of hit and miss what we end up with.

Do you all read and write Chinese? Do you order in Chinese or English when in a Chinese restaurant?

Snowmum, snap we are off to HKG for CNY as well. What vaccinations, if any are you giving your DD before you go over? Some docs are mentioning Hep A to me.

autumnlover · 21/01/2007 09:45

where do you live again teacakes?? and welcome back!!!

so CNY is only 4 weeks away!!! where can i get some red envelopes with more modern designs??? might not get a chance to get to chinatown before CNY .. any idea of english shops??

MomOnTheRun · 21/01/2007 10:23

autumnlover, you can get the red envelopes on ebay.

breadgirl, having a dh chef has it pros and cons. Lovely food but too much of it. I can't cook either so that makes 2 of us.

snowmum · 22/01/2007 16:34

Welcome back teacakes. Pity you can't make the dim sum meet up next week. Whereabouts do you live? Do you come up to London? Perhaps we can try to arrange something when you are next up in town.

Re vaccinations for DD's travel to HK. We will arrange for her to have the Hep A jab. It needs to be done at least a week before travel so plan to take her to see the nurse in early Feb. Are you doing the same?

Arrgh! Can't believe BA cabin crew are going to strike!! Toying with changing our flights at the mo...or should we sit tight and wait and see?

wyls · 24/01/2007 09:41

Hi sorry i havent been on here, DS is not well with the flu ...

Anyway, 1pm is fine with me and i have emailed the restaurant to see if they have a highchair and i have also request for a reservation for 4 adults and 4 kids. Is that correct?

Speak soon, wyls.

wyls · 24/01/2007 14:34

Hi just got the reply from the restaurant and they dont reserve table Mon to Fri and they only have 1 highchair and they said that they can fit us on the round table if we get there at 1230pm and after that they can really busy and cant guarantee we get the round table.

What do you think? I definitely need a highchair for my DS so that he can just leave me to chat and eat in peace (hopefully)

I dont mind going somewhere else. How about the Golden Dragon at Gerrard Street? They have highchairs and the food is good. I eat there all the time but I am happy for any other suggestions.

MomOnTheRun · 24/01/2007 20:44

The Golden Dragon is a bit iffy. They were shut down by the heath inspectors a while back. My sister went there in December and there were hairs (note plural) in the food. I'd avoid it if I can.

snowmum · 24/01/2007 20:51

Thanks Wyls for checking that out. Mmm...its a difficult decision. I don't really mind where we go and don't necessarily need a highchair as I have a booster seat for DD. Do Golden Dragon take bookings for dim sum? Have to admit I've never tried booking a table, usually arrive at 12pm to ensure we bag a table.

Hope your DS feels better soon. Its horrid when they get ill.

teacakes · 24/01/2007 21:18

I am in cambridgeshire at the moment and have not ventured going to Ldn since we moved here last Feb. It would probably be ok but I've been too scared to try the journey with DD, so don't know what I was thinking when booking flights to Hkg.

So noone answered my question - do you order in Chinese or English? Do you all read and write Chinese?

Snowmum, are you on BA as well, snap again. We were due to travel out on the 12th and thinking about changing, but then again it might all have calmed down by then.. who knows!

snowmum · 24/01/2007 21:22

MomOnTheRun, we must have crossed posted!

Been thinking, another possible option in the area is the Rainforest Cafe. Never eaten there but apparently there are things that may keep the kids amused whilst we eat. The link is here. What do people think?

snowmum · 24/01/2007 21:30

Teacakes, must be the day for crossed posts for me!

Yep we are booked on BA, due to fly out 13th Feb but considering changing it to 11th to avoid the worst of the disruption. I know the first day of the strike has been called off so hopefully the entire strike might be called off... However BA are allowing changes to flights at the mom and we are tempted to take them up on their offer and have an extra couple of days in HK to get more shopping done!

I went to chinese school (held every Sunday) for years so can read a bit of chinese, but not much. Generally order food in chinese but stick to the dishes I know how to order!

With regard to travelling with your DD, I would suggest trying it one day with your DH and see how it goes. I was really nervous of going on the train and tube with DD at first but now think nothing of it - altho I do plan my journey to minimise any problems. If you avoid peak times, things are quite quiet and I have had no problems finding space for the buggy. Best of luck!

autumnlover · 24/01/2007 21:31

dont do it!!!! i mean the rainforest cafe. i did it about 4 yrs ago and it was quite dark & loud (with all the animal noises and rain). dd1 was about 12mths then and they didn't have baby changing (do now i think). the tables were tight in terms of space and its expensive for what it is (burger food). i hated it so much i've decided never to go back unless i'm forced to.

but i think it might have had a refurb since and might be great!!! hopefully.

breadgirl · 24/01/2007 22:03

teacakes, i order in chinese, but i normally order the same stuff that my dds love. My cantonese is so-so but i used to go to chinese school and can read and write a bit.

Re you guys meet up, if you're still up for 'dim sum' how about the other big restaurants, like New Loon Fung, Harbour City?
I haven't been 'yum cha' in Chinatown in years though ..

MomOnTheRun · 25/01/2007 02:23

I've just woken up again. Dd3 is also ill. She's got a temperature and only taking fluids cos she's got ulcers in her mouth. Poor thing.
Teacakes, I'm a cantonese person, speak it at home and in the chinese community. Can read and write chinese cos did O-levels in HK. Am BBC but very traditional. Too much influence from parents and now dh.
I don't know which restaurants are children friendly so cannot comment. As I am not bringing dc I'll let you all decide.

wyls · 25/01/2007 10:54

Teacakes, I was born in HK and came over to the UK when I was 16. I order in Chinese and can read and write chinese. Well, my writing is not as good as before. And I read really slow now too.

As for the meet up, shame about the golden dragon cos i have always gone there in the past with friends or work but have to admit i havent been there for a while since started working from home.

I think champagne said that there is another resturant joy fook something that's child friendly. Champagne?

Snowmum, DS is better just teething badly but back at nursery today. I quite fancy the idea of rainforst cafe, at the end of the day, i dont mind what I eat really, chinese or not chinese.

We could always go to Pizza express cos i know that's definitely child friendly.

Shall we wait for champagne and in the meantime i will phone a few restaurants to see.

Momontherun, sorry to hear that dd3 is ill, hope she's better soon.

So we only need 1 highchair for my DS and that's it right? I have got a booster seat but i rather not bring it.

teacakes, are you going to join us?
