my sil is indian will ask her as she has a lovely name for her son.

saadia · 22/06/2006 16:09

Uma, means something in Hindi, Yasmin is popular, have a friend called Kala - could translate to Carla, Tara means star in Hindi I think.

JanH · 22/06/2006 16:10

Ooh, how about Lila? (Can also be spelt Leela). Close to Lily.

motherinferior · 22/06/2006 16:11

The one many people go for is Anita, which is actually a name which developed in both Hindi and English.

Having said that, there are so many Indian names around in England that these days that you'd also be fine with Laila/Leyla, or Lisa, or Nina, or Meena, or Sara, or Malini, or Usha, or Reena, or Maya, or...oh, loads. I like Ayesha - it's my DD1's middle name - but it's a bit Muslim for you, I suspect.

muma3 · 22/06/2006 16:12

india to sound really blonde

Kelly1978 · 22/06/2006 16:12

Nina
Rhea
Anita
Bela
Sheela
Kali
Trisha
Leela

I looked into that for my dts, names that common to Hindu and English ancestry. It is quite hard. I went with Hindu in the end, and my boys are called Ravi and Akshay. I thought these were straightforward but it often gets mispronounced.

I actually wanted Priya for a girl, because it is such a pretty name, and most westerners can pronounce it no probs.

Gingerbear · 22/06/2006 16:12

Neela?

motherinferior · 22/06/2006 16:12

Yasmin is lovely.

Also Neeta.

I'd just go for an Indian name, though. Worked for my parents both times

74Jamie · 22/06/2006 16:12

Aysha is a lovely name but too muslim for dhs family as to is zara azpparently which i really wanted

There are some really beautiful names and meanings in that Hindu list

NatalieJane · 22/06/2006 16:17

I love Yasmin, DH doesn't, but we have gone for Maia, it seems to be the only name we can all agree on!

Kelly1978 · 22/06/2006 16:19

the second link tends to throw in a lot of muslim/arabic names so beware of that! I spent hours looking through name sites when pg with the dts!

74Jamie · 22/06/2006 16:19

wow so many more names than i had first thought mnet is so great wsill show dh and families

I think Sahira is lovely

74Jamie · 22/06/2006 16:21

what do people think of Gina fits into both sides?

foxinsocks · 22/06/2006 16:26

personally, I like the more hindi names but it's still a pretty name

could you compromise and have a properly hindi sounding middle name and then choose the name you want as the first name?

foxinsocks · 22/06/2006 16:27

I think Zara/Sara (the one you want) is lovely!

JanH · 22/06/2006 16:27

What about Eesha instead of Ayesha?
