Is your pension a dog?

Every year I go through the profoundly depressing task of checking my pension fund performance.

This year, I've discovered courtesy of Bestinvest, that one of the funds is in fact a dog.

Whilst I am in general very fond of dogs, it's not a good thing for a pension fund. It means it is consistently underperforming against the average.

So I've increased contributions (again) to mop up some of the deficit, but switching the fund is probably the best thing to do.

I think it is a good idea to check the performance of funds at least once a year and reallocate to another better performing fund if needed.

That being said, the markets have been shockingly volatile the past 18 months, so it is difficult to tell what, if anything, is 'safe'.
