Credit Card Fraud (?)

I'm not having a good month!

This morning someone from Barclaycard rang me and told me I owe them £500 .

I don't have a Barclaycard, but I did have one in 2005 (which I thought I had cancelled).

Someone phoned me in September 2009 asking about irregular activity on this card, and I told them the transactions were not mine and I had cancelled the card years ago, end of story. Heard nothing more from them until today.

I have called Barclaycard back to check it's legit and it is, but I'm not sure if they are going to demand I pay this £500?

Even if the account wasn't cancelled as I thought, how would someone get a hold of the card to make any new transactions?

I don't even know the card number myself and presumably it's long expired now!?!

HELP!

What do you mean exactly by: "I have called Barclaycard back to check it's legit and it is.."?

My feeling is you need a letter from them saying you do not owe them anything and that you will not be charged this money or that it will have any adverse impact on your credit history.

Do you have any of your old bills or a letter of cancellation? Surely the old card would have expired by now anyway? Will they send you a list of the transactions? If you can prove that you could not possibly have carried out some or all of the transactions that would be very helpful.

The absolute last thing you need is this 'debt' selling on to a debt collection agency to pursue.

I mean that it's not some randomer just calling me to get my personal information (they called my mobile) as I called them back via the number on the Barclaycard website.

I spoke to someone on the fraud team and they said they will get back to me.

They did not ask me to pay anything so I guess that's a good sign.

A card from 2004/5 must have expired by now but the transactions were in 2009 which is odd.

I don't have any paperwork from the card anymore.

Good. I was thinking it might have been someone who had got your details who was trying to frighten you into paying £500 to them.

Certainly your 2004/05 card would have expired by 2009 and the transaction was 2009 and they had never sent you a bill or contacted you before now so I do not see how it could possibly be your fault. For example, if you still had a live card and had given the pin to someone else but that cannot possibly be the case.

I would not let it lie though. Get back in touch with them after a week or so and keep hassling until you have a written answer saying you do not owe the money.

Ok thanks!

All I can think is that they didn't cancel the card as I thought and they sent a new card to my old address.... no idea how someone would activate the new card without knowing my DOB etc though?

I destroyed the original card, don't even know the PIN so could not have told anyone and I live 150 miles away from the address now.

The transactions are for internet purchased and mobile phone top up though so hard to prove it could not have been me....

Very scary

One thing I do recall about credit card fraud is that when gangs do it by stealing an entire database or using fake card readers or paying waiters to skim card data they often leave it several years before using them which makes it much less likely they will be detected.

Good luck and hope it all turns out well.

Keep at them, some scum took £10.5k of my crdit card last year, too 8 weeks and weekly visits to the bank to get it sorted, they got my card deatils by hacking Ancestors.co.uk.

gosssipgirl · 28/03/2010 08:14

Shit, £10.5k!

I am so glad it's only £500!

I couldn't sleep last night

Had a text from a debt collection agency today

Police rang to check how I got on with Barclaycard and told me to ring them again.

Spoke to person in "Fraud Aftercare" department who said she would stop the debt collectors contacting me for 14 days and she would send me a form to fill in about the frauduland charges

I asked her how the card was still valid and she said it was valid from 2004 to 2013 !!!!!!!
