Hi there. I wonder if anyone can advise me. Before I start I do realise that dh and i are to blame for useless home accounting.

We moved in April 06 to our present house and as soon as we moved in went with Talk talk's new broadband offer. We had been with aol broadband.

Last night dh asked me what the aol £15.99 deb (not dd) on our account was. I had no idea. However rang aol this morning and apparently we have been paying for aol dial up for the last 4 years £700. I just can't believe it. Turns out dh had seen it on our statement, it's not on our dd list, over the years but thought it was connected to our talk talk account because they bought out aol. Now we are with Virgin he realised that something was up as we were still paying out to aol.

I am so cross with us but also don't understand how this has happened. I am so good at cancelling and transfering accounts usually. Aol didn't even have our current address yet I am sure I told them we had moved and we had to wait for Talk talk connection initially so we would have used them here for a while I'm sure.

I know how wishy washy this sounds but does antone think we might have a leg to stand on?

When I first spoke to the guy this morning he said our account was inactive but as soon aas we started getting politely exasperated he denied having said that.

Write a complaint letter. State the facts and also that the man said it was inactive.

Ask for a reply in 14 days. If no response follow up with a letter threatening legal.

Is the charge now cancelled?!

A quick internet search brings up a lot of customers in similar circumstances

Oh my goodness onabreak. Thank you for that link. I cannot believe I wouldn't have cancelled but do not remember the phone call of nearly 4 years ago. We have cancelled it now and have an email confirmation. I sifted through our online bank statements today and can see how dh was confused. At one point we both had a mobile with Carphone Warehouse then talk talk which came up on the statement as Carphone Warehouse. It's such a lot of money. I'm definitely going to do something. Thank you for your help.
