Certainly up until a few years ago you could request a book of uncrossed cheques, but I don't know why you would want one and I can't remember the last time I saw one. Friend who works in bank says you should write 'only' after both the payee's name and the amount if it's in whole £ and you should write 'not negotiable' in the cross lines as well as 'a/c payee only' if it isn't pre-printed.
