it's an old CRT... can I claim on the insurance or would it be classed as a normal end of lifespan thing?

I'd say end of it's life , depends on how long you had it though, if it's under 10 years old then it should still be fit for purpose and working as it should.

Even if it's less than 10 years old then it still wouldn't be covered on house insurance - things just breaking down never are.
