How long after a *debt* can you be chased for it for?

I had a letter today from O2 apparently I owe £56.99 for a phone that was disconnected during 2005. I don't remember owing any money and am usually very hot on paying things off when contracts end (to prevent this happening!).

I am going to phone them and ask them for statements showing exactly how I owe this.

Can they just out of the blue chase me for this 4 years down the line?

I think debts can be chased for up to either 6 or 7 years.
