If the term 'gear' is used, is this a general term for drugs or a particular drug?

I have always thought it was used for heroin rather than a generic term for drugs, but there may be regional differences.

Usually heroin, although some young eejits don't realise this and use it to refer to their soapbar hash

Have heard people refer to cannabis as gear though
