Working Tax Credit Thingy

Can anyone help? I've been on the IR website and entered all our details and it came up with a figure. Now - is that figure per week, month, year, child, what? I posted the question to their FAQ page and got a snotty reply saying "we cannot answer questions about an individual's circumstances". Er, excuse me - it wasn't an INDIVIDUAL question, it was a general question that a few people might have had. So - I'm turning to real people for help
