Renewing kids passports - can someone clarify what I suspect please?

My eldest got her first passport in 2000. The last time we went abroad was 2005 so it needs renewing if wanted to go again.

I can't remember what I paid in 2000 - would it have been the full amount? If I renewed it now it'd only be for another 12 months or so? Since that doesn't seem worth it can I just apply for another completely new passport?

i think everytime you renew it, you get it for another five years.

So, had you only paid half first time ILT? If I can just buy another 5 years that woudl be great. Have looked on Passport website and didn't really seem than clear to me (prob looking in wrong place). I knwo I shoudl just ring and ask but wondered if anyone actually knew.

I think they only renew under 16s passports for 5 year as their appearance changes so much. Can't remember what i paid last time but it is not the full adult fee.

well the fee for this one was £46 and you have to include all four grandparent details too,which is a pain!!

Thanks. I know I need to renew every 5 years but since we are 4 years after the first 5 year block (if that makes sense) I wondered how it works - do I have to get a year of the 2nd 5 year block or a fresh 5 year period?

All grandparents? Blimey, that could be very tricky for some people.

i am just in the process of sorting my 4 childrens passports out.

If dc is 15 it will cost you £46 and it will be for 5 years starting from the date they receive it ie. 15.05.09 and expire 15.05.14 then they will need to get an adult passport.

They can get an adult passport once they are 116+

Oh thank you both. So, every time you get a child's passport it is only valid for 5 years at a time and atm costs £46? I think I'm gettinmg confused think the first time you get one is for 10 years but the picture needs to be renewed after 5. Is that not right? You just get them for 5 years at a time?

Yes £46 each. I had to renew my three sons' in the summer.

Childrens passports are valid for 5 years, adult passports are valid for 10 years.
I've never had to include grandparents information on my childrens passports, is this a new thing?

yes it is expensive im just renewing my 4 dc and as oldest is 17 she has to get an adult one.........seems so expensive..

thats without getting the post office to 'check and send' and pay £3 per application to have the documents sent back via recorded mail.

Does everyone use the check and send service or just send them direct??? Just wondering coz this is an additional £8 aprox per application and it keeps adding up

I've never bothered with check and send.

If you renew 9 months before the old passport expires, your new passport will run for 10 (or 5 for a child) years and 9 months.

On the grandparents' details question - From the guidance booklet:

"If both parents were born after 31 December 1982, or were born outside the UK, write the full name,town, country, date of birth,and date of marriage of the grandparents (or details of the parents' claim to British nationality in section 8 of the application form"
