Is there a tax calculator that will let me enter how much gross I've earnt and tell me how much tax I should have paid?

Yup - rather a good one: www.listentotaxman.com. Remember that the figures it calculates for you are probably accurate, but not guaranteed.

Despite their reputation, my experience in the past is that is you just call HMRC and ask, they can often calculate tax or NICs there and then. The trick is finding the right number! It may be more complex if you have tax credits etc, though.
