Opening a bank account

Can anyone advise me?
I'm returning to the UK after being abroad for a very long time. I'm coming back alone with my 10 and 9 year olds and I left just after finishing school so it's been that long!

When we come back what do I need to open a bank account? I'll be living at my parents house at first and dh will be transferring some money monthly. Any tips about where to go and what I will need to take with me?

They've got very hot on identity fraud - you will need to show something proving that you are who you say you are (easy: passport) and also something proving that you live where you say you do which may be more problematic as the utilities etc will be in your parents' names.

Thanks, I will go in tomorrow and try to speak to the bank manager with my mum as they know each other quite well and he might go with her signing something saying we live there. Will certainly be better to have a new bank account so I can give all that info back in Germany when I close my German account.

Well, I got a bank account quite easily with my parents as a reference and proof of where I'll be living so that is one problem sorted! Couldn't quite believe how quickly and how high the overdraft was granted even though I won't be using it (will try not to) and now await post with cards, cheque book etc.
