someone pointing a camera at my house - suspicious behaviour?

Already posted this on "Chat" just after it happened this afternoon, but wondered if any property people on here might be able to shed light on it?

I was upstairs in the front bedroom getting the baby monitor which was plugged in near the window, and when I glanced out the window there was a car right outside the house. A woman driving and a man in the passenger seat pointing a big lens seemingly straight at me. I stared at them which didn't seem to phase them, so I moved towards the back of the room and after a few seconds they drove a bit further, then turned did a U-turn in the road, came back and parked outside next door's house for few seconds. Then right off and away.

I got their reg number cos it freaked me out a bit - were they casing the joint to burgle it later?!

I did think maybe it was just one of these property companies who photograph houses for websites with details of what they sold for and when. But they definitely didn't do the whole road if that's what they were doing.

Any ideas? On the Chat thread there were a few suggestions to let the police know in case it WAS something suspicious, so I have sent an email to our local community police officer who will be getting back to me within 48 hours.

ps. have already gone through what else it could be on the Chat thread - no affairs, benefit fraud or scandals to be had in this house so no PIs or paparazzi (unless it's mistaken identity!)

Have you applied for planning permission/built something without PP?
Anything a neighbour might've complained about?

gavel · 31/03/2009 18:51

Is next door up for sale/rent?

DSM · 31/03/2009 19:01

Is your house on Google Streetview?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/03/2009 19:03

We haven't applied for planning permission for anything, Chippy. One of the previous owners didn't exactly do a great job putting the garage on the side but I can't see how it could contravene anything. We have been here 6 years and the neighbours either side much longer than that.

Can't think of anything that someone might complain about.

Gavel, have spoken to one next-door neighbour to let him know what I saw in case he sees anything dodgy going on himself. He didn't say anything about his house going on the market, so I presume it's not. Haven't spoken to the other neighbour yet, but saw her briefly yesterday and am sure she would have told me if she was selling up.

The bloke with the camera was wearing very casual clothes: a scruffy old t-shirt - not the usual look of an estate agent or surveyor and the like, or someone legal, I wouldn't have thought. But who knows.

At an old address I saw someone photographing what seemed to be my house, plus he attached a camera up a lamp post pointing the same way
I called the local police and they basically said they were aware of it and were monitoring someone nearby but could not say anything else. I never did find out who they were watching or why!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/03/2009 19:06

No, house not on Google Streetview. I HAVE seen a picture of it recently on Zoopla property website, taken a few years after we moved in, with details of how much it sold for and when. Didn't notice anyone taking a photo then either but there it is, so SOMEONE must be going round doing this type of job. WAs just strange the way it was only these 3 houses though.

OMG, IheartNY!

I'm going to be suspicious of all my neighbours now!

Could it not possibly have been Google then?

There are loads of areas that aren't uploaded yet because there are 'bits missing', and they are going round getting pictures of all the 'bits' they need to fill in.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/03/2009 21:09

Thought they had proper vans with the Google logos on, DSM. Well, from what I've seen on the telly anyway. Unless they've just taken on temporary staff and told them to go out in their own cars or something.

Oh, I don't know, I would probably have assumed the same, as the original ones definitely did, but you never know, maybe they have sold all the 'original' cars and are now sending people out in their own cars.

Maybe I am thinking about ti too much..

Lets hope it was just something like that anyway.
