Part-X our car on 1st March for a new one - car tax question?

We've agreed to buy a new car and part exchange our old car as at 1st March. The old car will be exactly 3 years old as at 1st March.

We're paying the dealer the on the road price for the new car including a year's car tax, but it's just dawned on us the road tax on our current car expires 28th February.

Obviously we don't want to pay two lots of car tax, but what if we don't get the new one on the 1st which is a Sunday, but collect it on the Monday? Do we get an automatic fine or anything for not having renewed the tax on our current car? Bit concerned because the new car is apparently being shipped in. Also I think it would need an MOT as at 1st March anyway?

Any advice anyone? TIA.

you wont be able to buy tax for the old car unless it has a viable MOT for that date anyway! Speak to your dealer and ask if they expect the car to have mot and tax for the part x change

Thanks Bonkerz, DH just checked with the dealer and they said they were expecting to have to pay tax anyway to sell our part-exchange on, so will arrange tax and MOT on 1st March whether or not our new car is with us on that date. Phew! Was getting a bit worried about the logistics of arranging and paying for it all.
