Electric company

We moved house 11 months ago, gave our final meter readings etc and received our electric bill. The bill was just short of £250 and we knew it couldnt be right for 2 months based upon what we had been paying. Anyway to cut a very long story short the company have finally confirmed for us that someone had changed our opening readings when we left because the previous tennants had an outstanding balance, meaning they were offsetting it against us and adding £102 pounds to our final bill!!!

To get to this point we have been passed around the houses, had no one interested in actually listening to complaint, just telling me we owe the money, been promised letters, phone calls etc and never received them and because they were adament they were right, they passed it to a debt collector.

Now as means of compensation they have offered to inform the debt collectors of the correct amount that we owe (very generous of them!!!!) and a £50 cheque as a good will gesture.

I am not someone who normally pushes for things especially when it comes to money matters, I tend to see any handouts as a bonus but in this case I feel like we have been so unfairly treated that we should push the matter.

Has anyone had experience of this? Am I right to expect more? Should I accept it, push for more or take it to the energy ombudsman? Any feedback gratefully received.
