Answers please, tax/self assessment query

DH and I ahve the property self assessment. I fill them in online. In the past I have always included things like insurance, repairs etc. However, DH says the mortgage should be added, as we currently don't make much from the mortgage (rent is £200 a month, mortgage is £195), so we only really make £60 a year (or £30 each as it is split 2 ways)
I have never included the mortgage, but am wondering if I should?

I used to deduct my interest only mortgage payments from the income. It would make sense. You don't want to paying tax on the full amount of the rent do you. It was a while ago but I don't think the rules have changed.

I do think that you can only deduct the interest though, not the capital repayment part if you have a repayment mortgage. You should be able to work that out via your mortgage statement.

as pp's - only the interest element. You can get a certificate from your mortgage provider which shows the interest element for the tax year, although you are cutting it tight for the tax return deadline.

ref tax deadline, you can retrospectively claim tax back, i did it for at least two years worth a few years back.

agreed - don't put off doing the return because you haven't got the info, late filing can carry a penalty. Do the return without it and do an amendment later.
