Some advice about returning to work

I told my boss that I'd like to return in April. We were very honest with each other in that I said I know redundancy has hit the firm hard but I'd rather know if I am to be made redundant than him take me back because he legally has to only to make me redundant a few weeks down the line.

He said that he basically doesn't know what is happening and can't give me an answer either way. I work 20 hours per week Monday - Friday 9-1 which is perfect hours.

I have also now been offered another job but it is only 8 hours a week helping out a local childminder. Hours with her are 8-9 and 3-4 4 days per week. These hours will increase if I am happy as she's turning down work with not having someone to assist.

The thing is nothing is guaranteed. My normal part-time job is better paid and I'd need childcare 1.5 days a week but the childminding one means I can take him with me but the hours are short and I'd lose out on my working tax credits with not working 16 hours.

I'd hate to turn down the childminding if I am going to lose my other job but would prefer to go back to my other job! Any advice about what I can do?
