DH got a letter today saying he owed £143.91 from Wescot Debt Rcovery on behalf of 'MGT Ltd.'. There is a number to ring if you are paying, and a number to ring if you 'have a genuine reason not to pay' - both the same no. and an 0870 number (is that expensive?) I have googled MGT and cannot find anything, and we have no idea at all what this could be. Is this a scam? It's not a massive amount so I guess most people would just pay it.

Just checked company register quickly and can't find any MGT Ltd - is there a company registration number anywhere? Can't find anything relating to Wescot either.

090 numbers are the ones you really have to watch but yes I agree you should not ring until you more sure of what is going on.

Buggers. We don't get adult film channels, I guess men might pay the debt thinking their wives will find out or something. I am not ringing them and giving them money via the call. Intresting all similar amouns and one erson got their £1 for the credit agreement sent back with a letter saying 'matter closed'.

My dh got a bill from Westcot yesterday too, also with MGT ltd as the client.

We have also decided not to phone the telephone number, and have sent a letter today explaining that we have no knowledge of this debt. I wonder if there is a scam or an ID fraud going on. There seems to be so many households hit by this.

Yup, write to them saying, send proof that a) you're legit and b) it's actually me who owes you money. Otherwise get stuffed.

ilovetochat · 20/01/2009 15:12

speak to local trading standards, they can confirm if they are legit.

Phone Wescot, they will happily give you the telephone number for MGT Ltd.
It is usually Adult Films ordered through a set top box (ie Sky), occasionally its football matches etc that need to be ordered and incur an extra charge on top of your monthly subscription.
Wescot usually have the dates the films were ordered and the name of them (but only if these have been supplied by MGT) HTH
