Car repairs and warranties - do they exist?

Our car was bought second hand from a dealer, with 3 month warranty. The head gasket blew within the 3 months and it is being repaired by the dealer's mechanic.

Should we expect that this new head gasket and repairs are subject to any kind of guarantee? I know when we got our clutch replaced in old car it had 12 month warranty on that part, but I don't know if this is a legal thing or just them being 'nice' so to speak.

Please advise - I could ask the dealer but I would prefer to ask knowing what response I can/should expect.
