When to buy US dollars?

I have to buy dollars for a visit to New York towards the end of October.

Anyone have any ideas on whether now is a good time - or is it purely guesswork?!!

I do know the answer but I am not telling anyone because I want to make £4bn on currency exchanges in the next 2 weeks.

As well as worrying about what the right moment is, have you considerd comparing all the costs of exchanging - eg is post office no commission but worse rate better value than travel exchange better rate but some commission?
