I know this is a bit boring but me and DP seem to be shocked at every week when we have finished our shopping - there is myself, DP and my DD (nearly 4 and a dog)we spend between £90 - and this week £115 at Tescos - does this a seem a lot to spend on a weekly shop for three people? We woudl really appreiate any ideas do reduce it or anyone else who thinks this is too much or 'normal'
thanks

So, it's turkey dinosaurs for the dsses and organic free-range hand-cured lovingly butchered real dinosaurs for Cod and Mr Cod, eh? Tsk!

ImuststopdrinkingBlossomhill · 18/02/2005 19:40

Turkey dinosaurs

We never eat turkey in this house, yuck!

hercules · 18/02/2005 19:41

Now, I would never feed my kids that processed crap......

hercules · 18/02/2005 19:41

Made of pigs bums I believe.

Cod, you've put me off most of the meals I know!!!

Seriously, does anyone go to different supermarkets to get things cheaper eg.fruit + veg in one ,meat in another, cleaning products in a third??? Even though we are skint, I just can't be arsed with all of that. I hate doing my food shopping with toddlers in tow, and the thought of not doing the lot in Asda but spreading it through the week makes me ill

Gobbledigook · 18/02/2005 20:20

Eeew, I hate those turkey dinosaurs and chicken Thomas the tank engines - bleurgh!!!

What would be wrong with Tesco Finest steak though? Am I still better going to a butcher?

Also, sausages - at a butcher are they 100% meat or what? Tesco finest are about 84% or something and that's the highest meat content I've found.

Slinky · 18/02/2005 20:35

GG

Some of Marks and Spencers sausages are 93% meat content. These are the ones we have - they're very nice.

hoxtonchick · 18/02/2005 20:37

but does higher meat content mean more pigs bums? i can never work out which is worse..... cereal of more strange bits of animal. ones from our local farmers market are v. good but it isn't a cheap solution.

i normally spend about £70-80 a week for 3 of us. dp buys booze by the case from majestic. cheaper in asda but i do prefer sainsbury's.

maisystar · 18/02/2005 20:41

i spend about £60 a month online(tins, heavy stuff etc) and about £40 a week on milk, veg, and booze so thats about £55 a week in total. thats for me and ds-4 yrs.

stupidgirl · 18/02/2005 21:15

Our house has me, ds and dd (+2 cats). A weekly shop is usually around the £30 - £35 mark. That includes toiletries, cleaning products etc.

stupidgirl · 18/02/2005 21:17

Oh, I should add that we are all veggie. An that I've now started to use a organic veg box delivery, which I estimate will bring costs down, and hopefully use up some of the stuff in my cupboards.

I spend an average of £60 a week for two adults, DS (4), DD (9m). That includes nappies, wipes, booze (but DH drinks hardly anything and me 1 bottle wine per week unless we have visitors), formula (but due to largely breastfeeding DD has never had more than two bottles of formula a day), toiletries & cleaning stuff. My key is to be organised and buy what I need. ie menu planning. Somebody mentioned spending £15 on fruit/veg alone and I think that I will spend this. Especially because of needing stuff for DD.

Too much. I spent £140 on an Ocado shop last Friday and since, have spent another £60 in Sainsburys. On average spend at least £600 per month.

munnzieb · 19/02/2005 10:43

cod - I love the value sausages more than the expensive ones! i'm not posh! lol

and I buy all my stuf in different shops -

Freezer - iceland
Fridge - Kwiksave/tesco
Fresh/bread - morrisons/safeway
cleaning/washing powders - wilkos
juice - lidl
meats - either tesco, morrison or butcher, will start using butcher full time once DH is home and spend about £30 a month on meats and split it all into portions b4 it goes in the freezer.

but then again I don't have children yet.

miam · 19/02/2005 10:51

We spend about £110 per week and that is for 6 of us (plus a gerbil..). Not too bad really! Mind you, dh probably tots up another £15 on petrol due to driving around looking for bargains!

Demented · 19/02/2005 10:54

I have £90 to spend a week for two adults, two children and a cat. I find it very difficult to stick to, my shopping money for this month ran out last week!

We must spend at least £20 a week on fruit and veg. I go to all different shops, mainly because I live in the town and am always passing different supermakets/shops. As far as sausages go I only buy Bowyers (lean pork padded out with rice, 95% fat free, I think?) or the local butcher who wins awards for his sausages . Would like to be more organised and get all our meat from the butcher, they don't take Switch and it always scares me that I may not have enough money in my purse.

Would love to spend less.

tallulah · 20/02/2005 10:16

When I was organised & shopping online we were spending £60 pw (Sainsburys) for 6 of us. Now we are totally disorganised & tend to not do a proper shop for ages & keep nipping out for stuff we've run out of. Did a full shop 2 weeks ago & spent £85 at Tesco, & another full shop yesterday at Safeway & spent £91. (Lots of multibuy offers so the freezer is full now)

I just need to get out of the habit of extra spending the rest of the week because we've run out of something vital. (& yes, popping in for milk always seems to cost £25-30!)

handlemecarefully · 21/02/2005 09:15

Everything bought from supermarket (i.e. dont do supplenmentary shops)...

Averages £110 - £130 per week for dh, dd, 10 month old ds and me

Enid · 21/02/2005 09:18

too much. need to start budgeting again and NOT shopping at Waitrose.

We buy organic - v expensive.
