Claiming expenses if you are a witness - Anyone know how it works if you are away from home?

have never been a witness but have done jury service, they paid for my child care for the whole time, including travelling time, and they also give you a certain amount depending how long your day has been, this included travelling time. the forms taht i had to fill in asked what time i left home, then what time i arrived at court ect, im guessing it would be the same for a witness but not sure about overnight stays.

If you are giving evidence at a crown court then the day will not start before 10:30

When i claimed expenses for going to court has a witness everything was covered,but i think there was a limit to the amount.But it took at least 2 weeks to come through,and it was a cheque so had to wait for it to clear.

£1 per hour? whats the point in that?
i did my jury service at the old bailey in london and they paid £10per hour for child care. £1per hour is a joke.
