How do you go about getting signed off work by a doctor temporarily, and could you claim income support whilst you are signed off? How much is income support these days for a family of 4? (2 adults 2 children?)

Go and see your doctor and he will sign you off. I don't know anything re benefits really - but you should be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay?

Its for my DH, hes recently been made redundant and TBH we're having a bad time of it at the moment, he has a bad tummy problem which is making him constantly sick, hes feeling depressed over losing his job and we have decided best plan of action is to claim benefits for the kids summer holidays then i can go out to work and hopefully by then he will of recieved suitable treatment, but we need to know of our entitlements, have never been in this posistion before as he worked from age 16 and has never been out of work.

look at the what your entitled too site will show you there. Go to CAB?

LIZS · 07/07/2008 19:57

If he's not working anyway, I'm not sure it would be any more worthwhile him being signed off as such. Check entitled to and CAB for advice.

If he's not working then a sicknote may not benefit him much. Also any redundancy money/savings may put you over the limit for some benefits.

IS is approx £60 a week and no longer includes any child element as tax credits now exist.

If he is on JSA they may expect you to start looking as they will only expect one person to stay home with the children.
