I seriously need to save for a new (secondhand) car, everything is eye wateringly expensive these days! I’d like to really try to maximise what I save, and I hope doing a mindful month of reduced spending will help. Anyone else? I’ve not done this before.

Today I have avoided buying DD new pyjamas (came close to clicking “buy” but didn’t, we can make do), and didn’t buy myself a book I wanted…I can read my TBR pile some more. Small things but it will all add up. Tomorrow I’m at work all day and am determined to not take my purse, then won’t be able to buy chocolate on the way home 🫣.

Hi @ThatSereneCat 👋

I’d love the company. Though definitely spend on some ginger tea/biscuits to help that nausea, poor you. We have a two week long Oct holiday here, almost always rubbish weather too and it’s hard to not spend. I’m hoping to be really firm on some of the days though.

I’m glad I didn’t take my purse to work today, was a really bad day and would have definitely stopped on the way home for comfort food if I’d had it. (I’ve taken Apple Pay off, too easy.)

@DiscombobulatedHedgehogwe have a local charity shop that does just books. Do you have anything like that ?
I’m completely with you. Problem is I had to buy fuel today £80 🤬 I have my car in for MOT this month so hoping that will pass.
Had to pay for some parking. Will try to limit the rest of the month to just food.

Hi @Random8888 👋
Have you got any plans for doing it? Apart from sheer will power 😂. I found a pair of gorgeous cord dungarees last night down from £140 to £35 in my size last night and it was so hard not to get them but I’m really pleased I didn’t. It’s the trickle of spending I really want to control better.

No to sound mean but if you don’t go looking then you can’t just find gorgeous things. Can you unsubscribe from retailers emails or at least set a rule to direct them into a folder you can check less frequently? That way they may be out of stock when you decide to weaken! 🤣🤣

For the book can you see if your local library has it?

Or secondhand on amazon, from their ' available from other buyers' option?

DiscombobulatedHedgehog · 30/09/2026 19:28

@dreamingofgoodhair sadly I have no shops at all for twenty miles, and only a wee charity shop there. World of Books is very reasonable really, I just have to set myself firm limits I think. Good luck with the mot!

@Twizzletoe I went through and really cleared up my email subscriptions and that helps a lot. An annoying job but well worth doing.

@Rhaidimiddim always worth checking where you can get it cheapest when you do succumb and buy one. Amazon marketplace can be good for books definitely.

Today is a no spend, very happy with that.

Well, absolutely torrential rain here today - no playing out, and I’ve had to put the fire on. I’m trying not to use any coal - we get a tractor trailer load of wood at a time and chainsaw it up ourselves to make it as cheap as possible.

I bought a £4 dustpan and brush which we definitely needed but nothing else.

Tomorrow is going to be a speedy day as we are going the four hours to our nearest city for the day - on the bus it’s only costing £8 return for me and two children which is a huge help but we’re going to a large soft play which is going to be £50 including two meals. They’ll love it, they’ve never been, but I need to keep an eye on extra costs.

Well I’ve definitely spent more than I wanted to today, but everyone has had a nice time.

Tomorrow is my birthday and I was tempted to spend on a nice dinner or even a bottle of wine as not working Monday…but I’m not going to so I can counteract today a little. We met up with my son who is away at Uni whilst we were in the city and his shoes had holes in them so we went for an unplanned shoe shop. He never asks for anything, is very independent, so I’m happy I could do that for him but it was extra £.
