So your new job starts on 26th or new pay day is on 26th

IwanttoWFH · 20/08/2026 19:14

If you get paid on 10th September and join your new job on 26th September, you’ll have to wait until the October pay day to get your salary from your new job (if it pays monthly). If the pay day isn’t a full month of employment, they’ll pay you only for what you’ve worked.

I’m basically trying to work out if I’d be left short (if time it right) maybe say 11th starting the new job so I’d maybe get like 2 weeks pay from new job?

It depends when the pay day is and their internal arrangements. You’d have to ask them. Also some pay mid month for the whole month, others just up to pay day. You won’t know unless you ask

I’ve had this situation before and missed the new job pay run - so essentially if I worked the last two weeks in Jan for new job, I wouldn’t get paid for it until Feb 25th when I would get paid for 2weeks of Jan work plus the month of Feb. So you need to check with new job.

But you realise it’s pro rata right. So even if you work there on pay day it doesn’t mean you get the full month. You get paid just for the proportion of the month you work.

sorry if this sounds obvious bits obvious for me but I worry from your message it’s not obvious to you.

there could of course be a gap where you just miss the pay cycle in your new job so you may get a bumper pay the next month to make up for it which is maybe what you’re worried about as you’d need to cope for the extra time without pay

Mum2Fergus · 21/08/2026 12:27

You need to find out when employer does their payroll and the associated dates.

It depends when the pay cycle runs. Most companies pay monthly in arrears. A lot of companies who pay, say, on the 28th of the month, will have a cut off of 15th of the month for the pay cycle. So they will spend 15th-25th running the payroll, checking hours, logging overtime, etc., then set payment for the 28th. So in that situation, you'd perhaps have 4 days worth of pay at the end of month 1. Then you'd have a full month at the end of month 2.

Yeah that’s true guys hmmm! I also fear it’s something you can’t really ask in interview

Have you been offered the job? I work in HR and I am happy to share this info when we offer the job - it’s a normal question to ask. I wouldn’t ask at interview though.

TeenToTwenties · 22/08/2026 08:51

Yes you may find yourself with a temporary cash flow problem if pay roll at the new job isn't sorted and you miss a pay day.
So you need to have some savings or be extra careful for a month or 2.
Provided there is no gap in employment you won't end up with less pay overall.

This.

Dont ask at interview but its a perfectly reasonable question to ask once you’ve been offered the job

Superscientist · 22/08/2026 12:42

Ask once accepted and then work out dates that would be least problematic when you hand in your notice

Ask your team lead or admin when the payroll cut off date is. You may be too late to be paid in September.

Not sure if I’m more confused now lol! Thank you for all help
