How long after spending inheritance can I claim benefits again?

Hello, after buying my new house I’m left with around £60k to spend on what is needed work wise… I had to come off benefits when I inherited. But after my money has been spent I will need to claim again.. how long do I need to wait to be able to claim? Thank you

these people are angry at the boat loads coming in and claiming benefits. I am not the problem. I want to work. I will work but my partner will be holding us all down until I find something. I just wasn’t sure if I could claim or not. I’m not going to have to live off the 60k that has specially been put aside to make the house my own. The school spaces are going to come I just have to appeal through the council when there back open… If everyone had this attitude of not moving because they are worried about school spaces is beyond me. I’m moving to the country side in my forever home away from a big town where SA is happening on underage girls from migrants so I will move thank you very much. It’s a forever home with a beautiful back garden and a room for each of my children and a room for my mum when she can’t live by herself anymore.

If you can’t see why this is a problem for people - those with assets/cash claiming benefits - then you absolutely are the problem. You are choosing this instead of using money to get yourself set up in job, etc. Renovations don’t have to be instant and most people save for them from earned income,

How big's this house?! £60k is LOADS to spend on a full rewire and updated kitchen. Speaking as someone who's just had a full rewire on a 3 bed terrace. Spend what you need to make the house safe. You have 3 kids, why would you spend all that £60k in one go? Find a new job once you're settled, it'll help you build community in the area. Save a load of that money to help your children in the future. Can't you invest it?! Think of the interest on £60k or £50k after the rewire or 30k after rewire and kitchen. Or use it to pay off a chunk of the mortgage so it makes a difference longer term?

If it is purely cosmetic work that needs to be done to modernise it then that can be done over time when you have some spare cash. Just because you don't like the look of the kitchen or the old fashioned wallpaper doesn't mean you have to throw all your savings at it. Get yourself a 'house fund' pot and add to it now and then after your family has been sorted. There's no rush, think yourself lucky that you are in the position that you are in, many people don't even have a roof over their heads or any money left at the end of the month.

do you not understand that it’s unacceptable to ring fence the £60k for home improvements and expect your living costs to be covered by benefits?

Apparently, so long as the home you have bought is your primary/only residence and the other money is spent on essential upgrade/maintenance or a car for mobility etc, once your cash at bank drops below £16000 I believe you can apply. If you blow it on dream holidays and building a pool, that would likely be deemed intentional deprivation of assets and impact your ability to claim.

Your new claim may not include moneys towards rent/travel etc though, if you now have a fully paid off home (ie no mortgage or rent) and you also now have a mode of transport facilitating mobility, though, so expect the amount to be less that you previously received.

No. There’s a lot you can do.

Depending on the age of your children you can appeal for a place. This could work and might be the best way.

However, the LA has legally to offer you a place for the other children, if all the local schools ie schools within a reasonable distance are full you can apply for a Fair Access place which means the school will have to offer you places above their PAN. If you need help with this then make a post on the primary education forum and ask the very knowledgeable posters on there for advice. Many of them are involved in appeals and know the legalities inside and out.

the system is the system. The system that funds you is funded by the government being the biggest arms dealer to the very countries coming here ‘boat load’! This may shock you but SA is not migrant specific and certainly happens all over the country. You may well even end up living next door to migrants as the government is closing all the hotels and instead putting migrants in dispersal houses. We are all human and we all want a better life regardless of the lottery of where your born.

OP's mother has care/support needs and OP is moving/has moved nearer to her to meet those needs. I think it highly likely that that would constitute a good reason for giving up her job.

And if a work coach was bloody-minded enough to take the opposite view, I'm pretty confident that any decision that she was unemployed "without good reason" would be overturned if challenged.

And she didn't spend her money so that she could get benefits, she bought a bloody house with it, which is perfectly acceptable, even to the DWP! It's specifically listed as such in the CPAG welfare rights handbook, and on Housing Systems.

I don't know where you did your welfare rights training, but I'd suggest a refresher.
