Repeated use of new credit cards by someone - how is it happening and what do I do?

Recently started seeing test Deliveroo orders charged to my credit card. The delivery address isn't a house.

This happened the first time and I got a new card.

Same thing happened again. New card number and the same thing happened again.

I live in a flat of 3 homes but the envelopes on my post haven't been tampered with.

Does this suggest it's the bank or something else? I checked my statement and Clearscore and no other hard searches/spend are showing. Not sure what to do.

I wonder if it updates automatically to their Google pay/apple pay wallet when you get the new cards. Could you ask for the account to be closed and a completely new one set up maybe. Or change credit card company.

Hmm how can it do that with a totally new card number (isn't that essentially a brand new card)?

Do you use ATMs that aren’t in banks or corner shops a lot? If so your card might be getting skimmed. I’d suggest getting another card. Then not using your card where you usually use it for a bit.

Automatically updated cards
If a card that you saved in Google Wallet is lost, damaged, stolen or expired, your bank may automatically update it in the app once they create your new card. When your card is updated in Google Wallet, you can use it for contactless transactions on your device, even if you don't have your physical card yet.

No it’s not.,, I’ve had a new credit card about 5 months ago now, the old number still works at all the places which already had a continuous payment authority.

You mean orders that you haven’t made and orders that you haven’t authorised are being charged to your card?

or do you mean they keep taking test payments?

My OH uses the app on her phone in place of a physical card.

When the card was replaced the new one was active on her phone in minutes.

Does anyone else have access to your house and card?

Thanks all. So it turns out this is bigger than I originally thought as my credit card (same bank but separate to the debit card) also now has an unrecognised authorisation for £0 (like a test). I change my bank passwords before this so not sure if they have access to my phone!

My husband has been having some issues lately with test transactions and transactions that need authorising on his cards. They've now issued him with new credit and debit cards (as, helpfully, although he gets notifications on his apps, they don't say which account or card they relate to!).

The Apple pay on his phone though has updated automatically before the cards have even been issued. If someone, somehow, has managed to add your cards to another phone and they're trying Apple pay, then conceivably they're just getting updated each time.

If it might be that, I would suggest changing all passwords to your banking apps and also changing your iTunes password. Maybe that would clear any links that someone else has?

My DM has this issue with Amazon and a Tesco CC. They were taking out prime membership yet the account didn’t have it so she cancelled the card. It contained and Amazon said Tesco just continues to pay it. So eventually just closed her Tesco and Amazon account because they couldn’t stop it

Speak to your bank’s fraud department, we’ve had this with 3 of our company cards in the past couple of years. I suspect a dodgy petrol station as that’s the only place my staff use them.
