The £2 bus fare cap is coming back, worth £500+ a year if you commute by bus

I learnt that less than 50% of people in the UK would benefit from this (as most do not used the bus). Shocked me, because back of envelope maths is looking good for me.

Doesn't sound like much until you add it up. Two singles a day, five days a week is £10 a week back, about £520 a year. If you've got a teen paying adult singles to college it doubles.

There's a breakdown with the sums and what's still unknown here: https://trendingsheet.com/article/2-pound-bus-fare-cap-returns-england-what-it-saves

Anyone's local operator drop out of the old £2 scheme? Trying to work out how much "most of England" actually covers.

Trouble is it makes smaller fares disappear. £1.20 to go a few stops no longer exists, it is now the "capped" rate... more like a target rate.

Works for long distance I guess, but again not always. My dayrider ticket is just over 2 x £2 capped singles, but if I buy a multi ticket (5 for price of 4) it is not - and I can do as many buses as I like in a day.
Smoke and mirrors.

This happened near us, we are outside of Stagecoach’s urban zones, so when the original £2 fare came in suddenly all journeys, even 3 miles to the next town were at the capped rate. However that £2 capped rate became a £3 capped rate and so now will save quite a bit as college trip goes down from £6 a day to £4.

My kids school bus has increased to £2.75 a day, each way! No cap…
