Starmer's parting shot is to give EU students a £30k discount of their uni fees.

This is a kick in the teeth to our own students. If he has money to discount off uni fees for students he should discount our own students. It's an outrage.

It’s an outrage that you don’t know what you are talking about OP @caringcarer and are spreading plebeian fake news.

Eudaimonia11 · 30/06/2026 16:59

What impact will this have on jobs? Students usually try to work part time during their studies and it’s been widely reported that students have been struggling to find work and then struggling even more after graduation.

If we want to attract more EU students, we need to have more jobs available for everyone.

He’s secured a good deal for both EU and UK students?

Why do they deserve a discount. They are overseas students.

Because the international fees are ridiculously expensive. UK universities are in trouble because there aren't enough students. Thanks to Brexit, we lost the majority of European students. It's not only affecting the universities but the economy as well.I came here under the EU rules to do my master's and PhD, paying the same fees as a UK student. Now, instead of paying £10,000 a year, I would have to pay £30,000, which is absurd.

EspanaPorfavor · 30/06/2026 17:05

Duvetdayneeded · 30/06/2026 16:00

WTF!!!! Most of them don’t even pay the money back anyway but why should they get a discount when that doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world. This is an absolute joke.

They don’t get a loan they have to pay upfront

CuteOrangeElephant · 30/06/2026 16:42

Almost 10k a year seems crazy high for what a lot of students are actually getting. According to the University of Manchester a student studying English can expect 9-12 hours of lectures and seminars a week. 10k seems extremely steep for that.

Unfortunately, regardless of what you study, in the UK you pay the same tuition fee for every course. In other countries, if you study medicine, you pay five or even ten times more than someone studying English or History.

In the UK, students studying subjects like English effectively subsidise more expensive courses such as engineering and medicine, which require millions of pounds' worth of equipment and technology.

It is not fair in my opinion. But there is no way anyone would want to be a doctor if they had to spend half a million on their degree.

But it’s a deal which looks equitable on paper only. In reality there is nothing like the demand UK to EU.

He's just catching up with Scotland, who never screwed over EU students in the first place.

If he were really progressive, his "parting shot" would be to formally open negotiations to rejoin the single market.

Then we probably would get screwed.

No it’s not. We need international students to fund the unis. Without them the unis face financial collapse and since Brexit it has been even harder to get overseas students. By getting more international students here Starmer is attempting to protect British students’ fees from rising

OutOfApricots · 30/06/2026 17:13

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 16:25

International student curretly pay a lot more than UK students. Because they pay more UK students price is lower as party subsidised by international students. If EU students are no longer paying international student fees not only will the universities not have enough money for UK students but now also for a further 65000 EU students. What happens if universities don't have enough money? They put up fees for UK students or government will have to subsidise university costs if they can no longer charge international rates.

Many universities are strapped for cash because huge numbers of international students have been put off by the astronomical fees and are no longer coming to study here.

Rather than having to use taxpayers' money to bail out institutions on the verge of bankruptcy, or putting up UK students' fees, the government have decided that the best option is to encourage those international students back again, by lowering their fees to an acceptable level.

What part of that simple plan is difficult for you to understand?

Shuffletoesxtreme · 30/06/2026 17:15

Should be a shot in the arm for the higher education sector which is a massive industry employing hundreds and thousands of people (far more than any manufacturing sector). You really, really don't want to see what happens to our already struggling city centres if half our universities go bankrupt due to numbers of foreign students falling off a cliff due to Brexit and new visa rules.

Because we have to (if / when we rejoin the EU) treat everyone the same.
You can't offer UK students something cheaper than EU students.

If he does this now it'll reduce the bill when they start calculating the move back to the EU.

How long before we get the Euro?

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 17:36

RedTagAlan · 30/06/2026 16:42

Why will UK universities now have more EU students ? Surely now the playing field is level, so UK students have a better chance of getting a place at UK universities.

And Universities can still chase after non EU students.

The link I posted said a potential loss of 580 million. That is not an unsurmountable amount of money.

There are 2863180 students in the UK. That is 200 quid per student per year. 4 quid a week.

I get international fees at 15 to 38 k per year. Can't they put that up a bit to cover the that reduction?

It cost more than £11090 to educate our students. Now there will be not only 65000 less students to subsidise our own students but the 65000 will also need subsidising. It will attract many more thousands of EU students than the 65000 we currently take. This less space for other overseas students who pay more or will squeeze out our own students. I don't know why you can't see the consequences of this stupid policy. KS just sucking up to UVDL.

He’s subsituting Indian / Pakistani /Bangladeshi students for European ones. It’s disgusting. If there is money to discount fees he should offer it to students born in England first.

Exactly my thoughts. So many parents struggle to send their DC to uni ATM.

There's next to no EU students studying in the UK any more. The international students we have now are primarily Chinese and Indian and they will still be paying the international fee.

Google says ATM there are 65k EU students studying in the UK.

Mauro711 · 30/06/2026 17:41

So in a simplistic way of looking at this is either you have more EU students in your UK universities paying the same fees as domestic students, or you get fewer EU students coming and you get no fees and UK universities continue to struggle financially. Surely it's better to have more students overall paying the same fees?

You wouldn't have to pay £30k a year it would be more like £18k and you'd expect to pay more for a PhD
