Starmer's parting shot is to give EU students a £30k discount of their uni fees.

This is a kick in the teeth to our own students. If he has money to discount off uni fees for students he should discount our own students. It's an outrage.

Or they stay unemployed.

OK they stay here unemployed. Spending their parents money on food rent and going out. Supporting the economy they live in. Those are good things are they not?

No it just adds to what has become an insanely competitive environment. I was alerted when somehow IG sent me a spate of reels of overseas graduates supporting each other in getting UK jobs. Making hundreds of applications (just like Uk equivalents) and not deterred. There is very very little to choose between all these graduates and they often have to jump through an unbelievable amount of AI driven hoops just to get an human interview.

Surely having spent huge amounts educating them from the age of 4, the priority should be getting them into work and supporting themselves. Not encouraging yet more to stay.

Yep graduate jobs are rarer, I thought that had been in the press a fair bit. Competition is high already.

caringcarer · 30/06/2026 19:41

The graduates in the UK can't find graduate jobs. Why do you think flooding the job market with more graduates with the same skill sets adding further competition for our own graduates is a good idea?

The number of overseas students has declined. We won’t be flooded with EU students. The numbers may go up to what they were pre-Brexit, but that will still be less overall than there were.

Overseas grads can only stay for 18 months before they have to switch visas - most go back home in any case, so they’re not wholesale stealing jobs for British grads.

Presumably the same way it was before Brexit, when the unis (and the country as a whole) was better off.

Plus, uk students can now study in the eu and pay local prices. It’s €1k a year at my local uni in Spain.

Not many UK students would have good enough Spanish to study at university in Spain.

It’s more the loss in funds. The gap between what EU students will pay and do now.

The EU really wants this, it’s driven more from their end than ours.

It makes me genuinely wonder why Spanish students would want to study in a UK university of it's so cheap for them to study in Spain?

In return for a youth mobility scheme, not just reciprocal study. That’s got to be good for all our young people, not just those doing a degree.

I don’t know why people buy Bentleys when Ford Kas are so much cheaper.

Absolutely. It gives back a small piece of what Brexit snatched from them.

I was literally PAID to study in the uk as an EU Student! Do they still do that?

Paid by your country of origin? With a fellowship?
That is pretty standard, but I have only heard of it for post-graduates? Did you get it as an under-graduate or post-graduate?

Nope paid by the university in the uk! I paid 3.5k and they paid it back to me each term…I think they actually gave me back 3.8k

If you do have the money, then you can choose an international renown Uni, a degree that you got speaking English ( this features heavily on chances to get a good job, as fluent English speakers are very sought after in Spain), you may want to move to other cpuntries for work (again, degree in English).
If you had the money and your child is really good at a subject, would you send them to Harvard?

I never heard of that one.
Under or post graduation studies?

Oh, by the way, in my current Uni, some students study one year abroad, in Spain indeed. It helps them with their degree, as it relates to social sciences, languages and so on.
I love Universities! They are a little hub where people from everywhere gets together with a joined purpose, full of joy and hard workers.

I’m not sure why you’re asking. My post means U.K. universities have something o/s students value. Same with Harvard.

Not many UK students would have good enough Spanish to study at university in Spain.

A lot of EU countries offer uni programmes in English. I'm Swedish and we have lots of foreign students in our universities. In fact about a third of our higher education students are not Swedish citizens/residents prior but come here on a student visa.

In the UK you don't have to worry about them graduating and then not finding jobs and just stay on to live off benefits either as they wouldn't be allowed to stay unless they get sponsored by a company or was granted another student visa.
