UC amount help

Goodbyeandgoodnight · 15/04/2026 14:02

Can anyone help me work out roughly what amount we might receive in UC if our circumstances change? The online calculators are really inaccurate and are double the amount I’m working it out to be. (Tried the calculator with our current circumstances and was wrong).

Our UC entitlement is £1982 including carer element and disabled child.
DP earns £1778 per month this is the figure they use as the take home figure.
I would apply for Carers Allowence so my income would be £374 per month.

These are rounded amounts for ease as I just need a rough idea if we could survive with me being on Carers allowance as work is becoming very difficult at present due to caring duties so looking at other possible options until I can find another job that fits in or my caring responsibilities reduce and I can return to work properly.

Your carers allowance will get taken from your UC.

Put all your numbers into entitled to, and that should give you an accurate figure.

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 14:05

@Goodbyeandgoodnight do you rent? Need to know so I deduct the correct work allowance as it’s a vast difference between the two amounts.

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 14:07

Also you are generally no better off claim carers allowance as it is deducted £ for £ they round it up to 12 monthly payments instead of the 13 four weekly payments it’s paid in. Carers element is £208 a month you can claim that without carers allowance.

They take carers off but at least you’ll get your stamp paid.

Carers is also paid more often than UC which some people find makes budgeting/cashflow easier.

Goodbyeandgoodnight · 15/04/2026 14:25

@SimonWigglesBaratoneVoice I have tried entitled to but it’s not accurate. I used exact past figures to check how accurate it is and the UC entitlement was a difference of £122 and the payment amount was £48 difference for the month I did.

@BinBagDressYes we rent, it’s just gone up to £172 weekly.

I knew they take the Carers Allowance off £ for £ and we wouldn’t be better off but one of the calculations I tried would be about £500 worse off a month and we are already really stretched. If it was a small difference I could maybe make it work but £500 per month would be too much.

Have you included your income from child benefit?
Is that right your rent is £172 per week?

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 15:13

1778-425=1,353
1353x0.55= 744.15

1928-744.15-374=809.85 universal credit with carers allowance
1928-744.15= £1184 without carers allowance

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 15:14

@Goodbyeandgoodnight see my post above, hope that helps.

Goodbyeandgoodnight · 15/04/2026 15:17

@watchuswreckthemic I’m ignoring all child benefit as that won’t change and I just want to see the difference from me working/changing to carers allowance and UC amounts.

Yes that’s correct for rent (council tennant) although I forgot to add on here we have 4 weeks rent free but I did include in calculations.

@op
£743 would be deducted for DH wages
£374 would be deducted for carers allowance as that is taken £4£

if your total UC entitlement is £1982
then your estimated UC payment would be £865 assuming you have no other deductions

Goodbyeandgoodnight · 15/04/2026 15:32

These were my calculations, the disregard amount is £411.

DP wage £1778 - £411 disregarded = £1367 x 0.55 =£751.85
Entitlement £1982 - £751.85 - £374 = £856.15

So UC and CA would be £1230.15

(Entitled to calculator was at £1300 something and the entitlement was so much higher than we actually get)

The work allowance has increased to £425 as of April 5th.

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 16:26

The standard allowance for a couple has increased around £45, child allowance around £15, carers element around £5 and disabled child the same. I think the benefit calculator will be using the new updated figures, depending on your assessment period you make not see the increase until May.

BinBagDress · 15/04/2026 16:27

The exact increases are available on the government website, maybe try doing a manual calculation using those.

Goodbyeandgoodnight · 15/04/2026 19:46

@BinBagDress you superstar!! It was the new rates as I was using the old ones and also I didn’t realise now our DC has high rate instead of middle rate that’s also bumped it up which I found out when I looked up rates. Thank you so much.
