Tax rebate

I was paid back a lot of tax this month and I’ve written to HMRC of why I think it’s wrong. I’ve been told by 3 separate people the tax rebate is correct but I still disagree. Our work payroll changed and basically the numbers didn’t add up and made it look like I’d paid extra tax which were never real figures to begin with. I definitely was due a couple of grand but not the amount I was given. I’ve tried 3 times. Would you keep the money aside or spend it?

Put it into savings but don't spend it. It might take another year to get this sorted due to major backlog at HMRC.

Something similar happened to me. TUPE transfer meant new payroll contractor whose employee was on 1257L autopilot. As I had a good pension from a previous career my tax code was actually BR. Payslips were a day or two ahead of payroll so all was re-reun so I was paid correct amount. Pension was screwed up for a month but it sorted itself out in the end.

Keep some aside as hmrc are in a world of their own and take months to sort anything.
