HMRC self assessment

I am due money back from 2022/2023 self assessment as my P11d was filled out incorrectly on a car I had in last place of work. I wrote the letter in November 2025 and called about it in January. They said I won’t get a reply until December 2026. I thought that was bad but it’s now been pushed back to February 2027! What is taking so long? Can I complain to anyone? They said the first part of the calculation has been done but it’s been escalated and “in the right queue”. What the hell does that mean? For the other years PAYE got back to me within 2 weeks! Anyone had this ? I’m only due about £500!

It's mental. I had a similar issue with a tax code error a while back and it felt like my paperwork just falling into a black hole.

HMRC is backed up like crazy right now, and "in the right queue" is basically their way of saying, "It's on a pile, but we haven't touched it yet."

Honestly, for £500, it’s probably not worth the energy of chasing them every month.

They’re so slow at the moment that you'll just end up stressed out. It’s annoying, but it’ll likely just land in your bank account when you least expect it. I’d just try to forget about it and let it be a nice surprise when it finally arrives in 2027! I'm sure you'll appreciate the tiny interest they apply too 😁

They wouldn't be so tardy if it was you owing them money!

Maybe contact your MP and ask them to chase on your behalf.

Indeed. It was £500 by my calculations but I don’t see why it’s been escalated! Unless it’s a lot
more lol! Quite frankly I’d like the money to pay off debt hence why am keen to get hands on it!

Depends on your surname. That has a lot to do with it. M tends to be calculated mid year for example. If I were your accountant I would be advertising you to live your life like that money doesn't exist. Sorry OP. It will eventually arrive. Right now the Self assessment system is more like that of a developing nation.
