Why it’s worth checking your accounts regularly

I’ve got into the habit of checking my online bank and CC accounts pretty much daily. And just now I have spotted an unknown transaction on my CC (for a very small amount of money) – have called them and they have confirmed it's probably fraud so they are freezing the ac, refunding me and sending a new card.

I wonder how many of us might not have noticed (the amount was less than a tenner) – apparently the fraudsters will then use the card for higher value items. It’s really nasty to think someone would do that. But anyway, I wanted to remind you all that it’s worth having the habit of regular checks and querying anything that's not known. If it is legit then no harm done.

I check mine most days - minimum of 3 times a week and know exactly what should’ve going on and out so would pic up anything unusual immediately.

I check both my DH’s and my accounts regularly as well.

I have notifications come up on my phone whenever there is a transaction.

I check daily as well as notifications. We have been fraunded by small amounts quite a few times. Payments to different types of uber accounts.

Apparently this is usual to "test" stolen card details before taking larger sums

Yes I also had a Uber Eats transaction a few months ago which I thought hmm, don't remember ordering a takeaway. But I guess a lot of people would just think, oh, must have forgotten about it.

Good work on the regular checks everyone. I think this is a real positive of internet/app banking tbh.

My bank sends notification to my phone for every transaction. There is also two factor authorisation needed for online purchases over a certain amount. I check all my accounts every single day. It only takes a minute and I'd hate for the fraudy feckers to get anything of my hard earned money!

I check 2-3 times a day across 4 accounts. I also use bank app to check my credit score hasn't changed. I have had all my details stolen and cards used for fruadulent payments in the past. Has made me hypervigilent and paranoid. Always a head scratch moment when the once yearly DDs come out.

Chec mine pretty much daily.

A couple of years ago I spotted a payment to TfL for the London Ultra Low Emission Zone. We have and account for that/congestion charge and, at the time, our Euro 5 Berlingo diesel was liable for ULEZ charge. As we quite often go to the Harefield/Denham area we can end up in the zone.

On the day in question the car was nowhere near London. A cursory look at the camera images showed a VW with some letters common to our reg.

To be fair TfL held their hands up and refunded.

I’m all over mine, I checked them every day, without fail. And nip in the bud anything which is a payment that might be going out, or fraud. I’m really across it. I love being in control of it.

Check mine regularly and have the phone app notifications on.

Also, pay for most things on credit card and so keep all my debit cards frozen. Just unfreeze in the app if I need to use them, then immediately freeze them again afterwards.

I don't keep any money in my current account

that way its easy to see any transaction that would be irregular

Same. You can query anything unusual instantly.

I check ours every day, we’ve been a victim of fraud a few times and just generally for tracking spend I keep a close eye. It blows my mind people have subscriptions etc they forget about!

TallulahBetty · 25/02/2026 10:27

Several times a day. Foolish to not check at least once a day.

Biscuits4 · 25/02/2026 10:37

Not every day, but I do check our credit card and bank statement. Have found a couple of entries on our credit card in the past, which certainly haven't been ours and credit card company just take them off.
