The court does

There is a criminal compensation board which you can sometimes make a claim through for compensation if you have been injured

Have a look at www.cica.gov.uk

the court does but you can file for criminal injuries or the court can impose compensation order

Dont hold your breath though - the culprit will say that they can't afford it and the court will order them to pay 50p a week

Very often the court will fine the defendant and make a compensation order. The fine will go to the court and the compensation will come to you. Did they not make a compensation order? If not, you could always make a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.
