Scams in the UK - do you know of any?

What scams are you aware of that go on here? I’m looking at the crate thread for commercial properties. I feel like many scams are mentioned in general discourse and they get boiled down to supposedly being an urban myth. Yet. Do your eyes see some stuff that doesn’t add up?

So, for example, fires in unused buildings. Chalked up to delinquent kids making merriment.

Quite a few small business fires in my area recently, one a garage, one a grocers, one a hairdressers. Doubt they’d be scams but times are hard and there’s speculation on local social media.

Lots of vape/mini mart shops/barbers. Again, might be legit businesses but who knows. There’s been a lot on the news about organised crime behind these places.

Stickers over pay by phone QR codes leading to fraudulent websites. All the usual scams re; ‘you’re eligible for this or that benefit, click here’.

We get trading standard alerts for various scams through quite often.

Too many to mention. Radio 4 is doing a series on scams at the moment www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/m002h2gt?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Stickers over QR codes in car parks.

scammers somehow impersonating your bank phone number so it actually comes up as “x bank” on your phone if you have the number saved. So you think it must be genuine.

Puppies. People renting air BNBs and then selling puppy farmed puppies out of delightful rural cottages.

My Dad got scammed by his friend who was trying to help a Nigerian business man move his £66million inheritance out of Nigeria. He was willing to share it with the person who helped him. The friend was from a wealthy family - had given away all his money to his daughter - so there was no point in pursing him to get the money back - in the end they got nearly £100K which the police suggested was too small for them to be bothered with. They only looked at scams over £250K

Friend was sold a dream camper van online
They paid the money
The owner offered to deliver the van
The van never arrived
Reported to police

There are loads of scam adverts for camper vans & other vehicles if you know what you are looking for

Always view all vehicles in person, before paying any money
